International Warranty
International Warranty
I'm trying to buy a T61 14" SXGA+ with X3100, wich is not findable in France. So I think I may try to buy it from US by some friend and have it sent to me.
But I'm wondering about international warranty. If I try to configure this T61, the result is a 8897CTO, which is not eligible to IWS, while 8895 is.
How should I obtain a warranty in France if I buy a CTO in US?
Regards,

The issue of IWS on e.g. T61 CTO's has been discussed recently on this forum; see e.g. the thread T61 with IWS or How to buy a customized thinkpad in US legally & export (search for "Warranty" in the latter thread). In short, it does not seem - as far as I have read on this forum - that you are able to obtain IWS (e.g. coverage in Europe) on CTO'ed ThinkPads bought e.g. in the USA and imported abroad.
Apparently, you therefore seem to be faced with the choice of either buying (at a very expensive price in Europe!) ThinkPads in your home country, whatever limited selection available there, but which will be covered by full warranty, or import a CTO'ed model from abroad and then having to ship forth and back in the case of ever needing service.
Not a very easy choice, I'm afraid...
Best regards,
Johan

Hi corsac,
I was in the exact same situation a few weeks earlier. Models which can be accessed from Lenovo's front page seem not to be eligible for IWS, but I ordered mine through this page, where 8895 and 8889 are available:
Thinkpad T series
I advise you to do the same to get the international warranty.
I've found the link on this thread:

I guess you already know it... but just in case: the IWS eligibility can be checked here:

Not so long ago I think I've seen in the CTO pages that you could choose your warranty, and that it changed the type number (between 8889, 8895 and 8897, something like that)Johan wrote:The issue of IWS on e.g. T61 CTO's has been discussed recently on this forum; see e.g. the thread T61 with IWS or How to buy a customized thinkpad in US legally & export (search for "Warranty" in the latter thread). Yeah, thanks anyway. Problem is that I don't really want a nvidia card because I want to run Linux on it.Apparently, you therefore seem to be faced with the choice of either buying (at a very expensive price in Europe!) Thanks for that url! I'll use it when I buy it.gr wrote:Hi corsac,

Yeah, I knew that, that's why I saw that 8897 didn't have IWS.I guess you already know it... but just in case: the IWS eligibility can be checked here:

Thanks both for you help.

In general non-CTO models from the US will be covered by IWS, so there is still the option of importing one of those, if it makes financial sense.Johan wrote:Apparently, you therefore seem to be faced with the choice of either buying (at a very expensive price in Europe!)
