I don't have a 5K100, but I had both 7K60 and 7K100.
My 7K100 that I presently use is very quiet, and has much less vibration than my 7K60, to the point that my HDD is not noticed.
The 7K60 spins up had a slight whirl sound, a bit of vibration, but this did not bother me. But some on this forum didn't like the vibration.

I have considered investing in a 7k100 drive for the T43 in my signature.
The lesser vibration sounds great, and I am closer to making the buy. How are the temperatures with the 7k100? Same as 7k60?

The palm rests on my T42s (2373-K5H) with 1 GB RAM and 7K100 feels warm--but not hot, due to good cooling system doing its job.
As an aside:
Actually, I noticed that putting my 7K60 into external USB enclosure (you still don't need external power!!), the external USB enclosure is noticably warmer than my Fujitsu 5K40 also in external USB enclosure... so the 7200 RPM HDD's seem to run a bit warmer than 5400 RPM ones...

Why is my P1 Gen 7 so much better on battery? Cool, quiet, fast — but not on AC.
