X220 i5-2520m Express card 54mm USB 3.0

#1 Post by surd2004 » Mon Nov 07, 2016 12:47 am

Hi,

I've a X220 i5-2520m with Windows Home 64bit. Bios is ver 1.42. I'm looking for an 54mm express card that has USB 3.0 ports to work with my X220.

I had tested using Startech and nothing appeared to work even though the drivers were installed. Popped in the card and nothing appeared.

I had heard of AKE cards (not sure if it's Renesas or Fresco Logic FL1100) which worked with X220 in Win 7.

Please let me know if there's any success stories.

TIA !

Why dont you use the search option first, using Renesas as a keyword gives you 2 pages of threads to read most of which refer to the X220. Start with the link below.

I'm using a Fresco Logic FL1100-based card on my X220. It works well in Windows 7 and Linux (kernel 4.3 and later)
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts
RIP: 760XD 9546-U9E

I would suggest a Fresco Logic as well. Renesas cards are very finicky, and an X220 is one laptop where they just don't work well.

If you want USB 3.0 and eSATA, there is an ASMedia-based combo card with one port of each (the eSATA is implemented over USB3, though, not native PCIe).
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

I had tested the 54mm expresscard USB 3.0 based on FL1100 chip on my X220 with Windows 10 64bit. Works well !

Have to enable the bios setting first. Tested good ! Works well with USB 3.0 flash drive and mobile hdd. No external power required.
