Best External Hard Drive

I cant decide bewteen the MAxtor One Touch I, and the One Touch II, or the laClie drives.

I am looking for at least 150gb.

Any help would be apreciated.

It would probably be cheaper if you bought a hdd of your choice then buy a external enclosure (usb2.0, firewire, or both) for $30-$50.

I was thinking about this; But a couple things worry me.

1) reliability of a build your own hard drive kit
2) lack of backup and secuirty software
3) general problems of not going with a big manufatcurer.

This would be cheaper. I am just kinda worried.

I do have an 80gb 4200 2.5" hd lying around but its kinda slow and too small.

Here is the Maxtor one touch II which I like. It is 250Gb 7200rom, 16mb cache. It has secuirty and awesome backup software.

I was also thinking about the Maxtor onetouch I hard drives. The are less expensive, but less cache and no secuirty software.

On the other hand is the lacie drives. There are coller looking and smaller. But i dont know much about them.

In the end my primary concerns are reliability, speed and the saftey ofmy data.

I will be using it to store family pictures, music, MiniDv footage, and a backup of my 7k60 Hard drive

If you have a 80gb 2.5" hard drive laying around I would put it to use. Simply because it probably has warranty... I have used those 2.5" cases and had no problems whatsoever. The one I use is Vantec NexStar for 2.5" drives. The nice thing about this is its smaller size and no additional power required. You can take it with you and use it on the go...

Generally people have very little problems with these cases... even for the larger 3.5" cases. Just make sure you get one from a reputable company...

The software though,... is a little bit thougher. On the other hand the number one rule of backup, is to backup frequently, have multiple copies and at separate locations. So if you are concerned, perhaps you should invest in a DVD burner instead.... ??? depending on your needs.
