Which trackpoint

#1 Post by ThinkPad » Tue Feb 15, 2005 3:23 am

cap do you use?

So far ive seen the classic style, the soft dome (which I have) and the rim style, which I have never used. Any input?

I still love the "cats' tongue" version. Unfortunately, it seems to wear out a great deal faster than the new soft-dome types (which are okay, but for some reason I feel like I have more traction on the rough cap than I do on the grippy soft-dome).

Tried the rim...it sucks. Absolutely hated it. Perhaps if it felt more like my entire finger was touching the surface inside the rim, it would be better, but as it was it felt like my finger was "too big" for the cap and only managed to make contact at the edge of the rim. It felt very awkward to me.

This is a very good question. Initially after purchasing my KTU around July 2004, I tried all 3 of the Trackpoint caps and found the standard (soft dome) easiest to use. Keep in mind that I have never used any type of trackpoint navigation.

However, a few months later after being comfortable using the Trackpoint and the Softdome (I rarely use the touchpad) I played around with the different caps again. Using the rim I found that I had much more control and stuck with it. Fast forward a month or 2 and I again have adjusted my trackpoint sensitivity to the highest setting (Light Touch -less movement of the stick = greater movement of pointer).

Cliff Notes:
As a Trackpoint Newbie I used the Standard Soft Dome.
As I became more familiar to the Trackpoint I used the Rim.
After learning to finesse the Trackpoint Rim Cap I switched to the higest sensitivity.

Maybe this thread would benefit with the use of a poll?

Cat Tongue

#4 Post by asiafish » Thu Feb 17, 2005 7:44 pm

Is all I've ever known, but then I set up a T42 for a friend and tried the soft dome. As soon as I got home, I went ontl IBM's site and ordered a cap set of my very own.

Hopefully that soft dome will look and feel as good on my T22 as it did on my friend's T42. Curious about the rim and will give it a try.

I already run my trackpoint at the highest speed and with the lightest touch.

I found on my T22 that I used the cats tongue classic tip so much it wore my fingerprint off and started to hurt quite a bit.

I keep my sensitivity and acceleration cranked up pretty high for minimal pressure, too.

I like the softdome now. Much less abrasive.

Trackpoint Cap Popularity Contest

(A mod should move that to General.)

New caps arrived today

#7 Post by asiafish » Sat Feb 19, 2005 12:13 am

Well I got a small bag of six trackpoint caps today from IBM (packed in a box sized for a ThinkPad), and have since tried both the rim and the soft dome on my T22.

So far, the soft dome wins, and will remain on my T22 until it either annoys me or wears out, at which time I'll probably try the rim.

Do any of your soft dome users know how long these things last? I usually a month or three out of a cat tongue cap before it lost its tonguiness and needed to be replaced, and hope the rubber dome lasts a bit (a lot?) longer.

It does look and feel great, giving my T22 a fresh and modern appearance.

I am a new fan of the mushroom cap model ... the suction cup was too strange feeling and the traditional cat tongue got dirty within a few weeks time.
