Should I be able to charge an ipod, using T42 USB 2.0 port?

#1 Post by nikemen » Sun Dec 26, 2004 6:29 pm

I am able to charge my IPAQ with a connector, but I have the USB cord for my ipod, which allows me to connect, but I don't seem to be getting any power to the ipod?

Can anyone confirm that charging is possible here?

I might be wrong but I believe you need a firewire port to charge the iPod.

usb 2.0 should do it

Technically, usb2.0 powered ports should do it. I know my ipaq does it, and it works from my desktop machine. I don't know why the USB ports on the thinkpad would be differant, or maybe the cable is wrong.

I may be wrong, but last I checked the iPod is designed to be only charged through the firewire port. I believe this has to do with the amount of current needed.

The cable I have for my iPod is the USB 2.0 / FireWire cable - you have to plug in the USB 2.0 for data, then plug in the FireWire cable to the AC Adapter.

Only the iPod mini will charge from a USB 2.0 port.
All others need Firewire

I just bought my wife a 20gig 4gen Ipod and it charges from the USB 2.0 port. I am pretty sure it mentions charging via usb2.0 in the user manual.

i can confirm that my iPod mini charges via my USB port. I rec'd two cables with my mini. One for that has the iPod connector on one end and firewire on the other.

The second cable is a usb cable that has a pic of Apple on one side and USB on the other.

All the newer ones do. The Photo, the 4G, and the Mini with the newer firmware. As far as I know...
