T43 project

#1 Post by WASP Enterprises » Mon Nov 04, 2024 4:15 am

Hi everyone,

I just bought a T43 for 30 euros and I'd like to upgrade this pc a much as possible to use it for low level dev and I'm curious to see how far can I go with such an old computer.
I plan to use this computer under FreeBSD i386 with DWM as window manager and ST as a terminal for a very very minimal system.

But I have few questions about what's possible or not :)

First I'd like to replace the wifi card with a more recent one, the TP-LINK TL-WN861N seems to be a good choice.

Then I'd like to make the famous SATA mod, for this that's ok, thanks to the community for all the ressources !
But I'm not sure about which SSD I should put in. Do I need a SATA II SSD ? I'm struggling to find one :|
(I really want to use a SSD, HDD is a no go for me)

And after that if it all works I will change the french AZERTY horror keyboard with a QWERTY ANSI if I can find one.

I was wondering if someone already did a USB-C charger mod on a T4x ? I would be great to charge it with a USB-C !

I will update this post too keep you informed :)
Thank you very much !

Any 2.5" SATA SSD will work.

That's not easy to do because the USB-C Power Delivery specification doesn't support the T43's charging voltage of 16V; the closest supported voltages are 15V (too low) and 20V (too high). Thinkpads from the T60 generation onward have 20V charging voltage so conversion is straightforward.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
