Basically, the stepping should be llsted with the processor spec.'s.
Here is Intel's utilty for finding that information;
http://processorfinder.intel.com/default.aspx
The only complication is that not all of the CPU's that Intel releases are in the table. They don't list what they call OEM CPU's - CPU's that they generally sell in bulk to computer builders like HP, Dell, IBM, etc.
I'm not sure what percentage of CPU's are missing from the table, but it seems high, like 20% or so.
So, usually a Google search for the specific processor number or sSpec will turn up the details of the CPU.
Note: Even Intel's tables are sometimes inaccurate.

just opened the intel utility, and search for Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processors - Munderclocker wrote:Basically, the stepping should be llsted with the processor spec.'s.

i found something odd, i have t40 1.5GHz with 1MB cache
with the cpu-z utility, it says my processor is banias.
on the intel's site, there are only this model for the 1.5 GHz line
SL5YT 1.50 GHz N/A N/A 400 MHz 0.13 micron B0 512 KB 478 pin
SL5ZX 1.50 GHz N/A N/A 400 MHz 0.13 micron B0 512 KB 478 pin
SL6CF 1.50 GHz N/A N/A 400 MHz 0.13 micron B0 512 KB 478 pin
just wonder why the cache differs so much..

You should be looking at the "Pentium M" cpu list, not the "Pentium 4 M" list.
It's still confusing after all these years!

Hey all, I got this working on my T40 in Linux. See here:

Yes, Intel has a very nice web-based table for this --> http://processorfinder.intel.com/

Re: T4x Banias to Dothan Upgrade - Proper Stepping Required!
Bringing up the old thread, but someone might find this useful.
I popped my C-stepping Pentium M 750 into my test-bed T41 and with the little help from NHC it ran like it should. You have to switch on manual dynamic switching and it works without a problem.
Of course, it works on 100 MHz FSB, so max speed will be 1400 MHz (1866 MHz with 133 FSB) but with a little tweak on the clock generator (detailed guidelines found in the thread about forcing the 133 FSB) you can use 7x0 Dothans or overclock 7x5's.
