Need help in Buying a T42

#1 Post by ahts » Wed Jun 16, 2004 12:24 pm

Hello guys, I need some advice on which T42 to purchase. I need a DVD-CDRW, 512M of RAM, a HS HD and a 9600 graphics card. I have around $2,200.00 to spend. Can anyone out there give me advice on which model has the best value? :) Everytime I do it myself, I end up wanting everything!! hehe!! Thanks in advance!

the only model I found in the tabook.pdf ( ftp://www.thinkpads.com/pub/T42%20Pages ... tabook.pdf ) with your specifications was the 2378-DXU or the 2379-DXU
Both have PM 735 1.7GHz, 60GB HDD 7200rpm, 512RAM,15" SXGA+, Radeon Mobility 9600, Combo Drive (CD-RW/DVD-ROM), wireless, bluetooth, blah blah blah.... (I mean, windows xp pro etc...)

the only difference between those 2 is that the 2378 has 1 year warranty and the 2379 has 3 year warranty. I don't know about the price... I'm guessing around U$2600, send and e-mail to Bill for a quote.. bill@thinkpads.com
ThinkPad T42p 2373-GVU (now dead waiting for resurection) SHE IS ALIIIIIIIVE! (resurection day: 10/12/2005)
Ordered: June 14 04
Recieved: June 23 04(thanx Bill)
Win XP Pro / Ubuntu

I just purchased a T42-2373-8ZU from Bill on June 4 and paid right around $2200. It has PM 735, 40 GB 5400 rpm, 512RAM, 14.1"SXGA+, Radeon9600, CD-RW/DVD-ROM. I fully prepaid my order which gave me a better discount, and I'm not sure if Bill is still doing that. But if so, it might be just what you need (except for maybe the HD). I ordered it June 4, and it shipped yesterday and should arrive June 17.

thanks guys!! I'm thinking of getting the 2373-9XU, I think its very close to the one tylerdrc bought, I have no idea how much though. If it's close to $2600, I might as well go for the ones Sci-Clone mentioned....geez!!! This is really confusing!! :x Anyways, thank you so much for the input.

hey guys, I've been thinking of getting a 2378-FVU and then just adding 256M of RAM. Am I missing something here? This is just around $2000, how much would 256M of RAM cost? $80 bucks maybe? What do you guys think? :D

That is the exact laptop I was first considering, but once I realized that I would have to pay close to $200 in tax for ordering it from IBM, I thought about ordering a laptop from Bill. For about the same price (since there's no tax), the 2373-8ZU has 512M ram in one slot plus a 3 year warranty (vs. 1 year).

512MB of RAM from crucial is around $125. you can get it cheaper at newegg and other sources. I just bought one for my T42.
