Trackpoint mark on LCD?

#1 Post by Sci-Clone » Wed Jun 16, 2004 3:35 pm

Message has been edited by Moderator

I have no laptop and have never had one. But my girlfriend's Dell Latitude C840 happens to have a trackpoint (c**t as I like to call it since her laptop name is Jasmine and my desktop is Aladdin  . Sorry if that is inappropriate :) ) on it. I noticed that it would touch the screen and I would clean the sreen for her every so often. Now, after a year or so the screen is permanently damaged because of the c**t... I mean.... huuummm... the trackpoint.
Does anyone know if that happens with the ThinkPad T42p 14" or any one that uses the same case? Thank you in advance!

P.S: I'm sorry if this message offended you in any way. If it did, you are welcome to call me on it and I will edit it approprietly. Have Nice day everyone!

As far as I know it only happens when you put something heavy on the laptop (when it's closed ) like a book etc. The top cover can't handle heavy stuffs, but normaly the ThinkPad's TrackPoint won't leave any mark on the screen. And don't forget that the problem occured on a Dell laptop, and once you go Dell, you'll go to hell. (No offense).

Yeah, there's a mark on my T40 from the trackpoint...probably too many books wedged in my backpack along with my laptop. I now put a screen cloth on top of the keyboard when it's closed...picked it up at http://www.radtech.us (not affiliated with the company in any way). It's made for the Mac, but the 14" one works fine on my T40.

We have many models of A and T series ThinkPads at work that get shipped all over the country and not a single one has a "c**t scar" on the screen....

Tell her to dump the Dell and find Big Blue. If she's cute, tell her to dump you as well and give me a call...

Anybody else use one of these? They look pretty cool, and if you click on "PC" from the link you can get them without the logos.

I asked the same question a few days back (Too lazy to find the forum's link) and I get the same issue with my t40p. The keyboard and the "c**t" as you call it, on the display.

I went low tech: I cut a rectangular piece of an old cotton T-Shirt and put on top of the keyboard everytime I put in my backpack - Problem solved. Cost: $0.00 - Ok, nothing is free - The T-Shirt I was going to throw out anyway and my time's worth of 2 minutes.

I would venture to say that if the trackpoint was to cause permanent damage to the screen during your warrany it should or would be covered.

Great idea atlacatl! I might just do that. Or maybe I'll try to find some sort of material that is a little more "sturdy" as in not too flexible like a shirt fabric. But that is an awesome idea. :D

Makes my thinkpads names (Mistress [T23], slave [560Z] and subby [560X]) pale in comparison.

Hm? At this point it's probably no use to edit the original message, as it will require a recursive edit of each one who replied :)

May as well delete the whole thread, if the original poster offended anyone...I, for one, wasn't...

You are right.. this is getting off topic. Sorry for having to put you through this. I appologize. But anyway? Anyone can think of any material other than a t-shirt fabric to put in between the keyboard and the LCD when it's closed in order for the c**t not to damage the screen?

I would just use a lint-free cloth (you can buy one in Staples etc.). Just cover the TrackPoint with it before you close your TP.

No problem, took all of 1min. Besides, that is my duty as moderator.

Anyway, I think you have about 3 choices:

1.) Place something (fabric, paper, etc.) between trackpoint and screen every time you take it with you
2.) Change the trackpoint cap to a different style that leaves less or no print (or remove it altogether...is this an option?)
3.) Deal with it.

I am curious as to whether or not it's an issue with mine, we shall see in a few weeks.

By the way, is the mark some kind of permanent pressure mark on the screen or just a little grease? If its just dirt/oil, then maybe you should wash your hands before touching the c**t?!?

First of all, when my girlfriend read this she laughed her butt off! lol :D

Second, it is not a grease/dirt/oil damage. It is a pressure demage.

But anyway. That's her laptop! Mine is coming soon and I am the only one that will get to play around with it! hehehe

Actually, yes, I was personally offended by your use of a vulgar sexual term for the TrackPoint.

Aside from that, the real problem is not the juvenile language. It's that some of us read the forum from work, and browsing web sites and forums that have vulgar language or graphics could get us fired.

vulgar sexual term? I'm sorry nonny but c****ris is not even a slang. It is a word used to describe part of the female body, just like arm, leg or even penis(male body in this case  ). as the dictionary puts it "A small elongated erectile organ at the anterior part of the vulva, homologous with the penis". It wasn't supposed to be sexual and it is not vulgar in any shape or form. I'm sorry I offended you, it was not my intention. I find this community to be great and respectful and I mean nothing to change that. Anyway, this is not the topic of this thread so I also appologize for everyone that started reading this thread and discovered that it was going off topic. So thank you for everyone that gave me your opinions and ideas! :)

I am not sure that is is a good idea to place something between the keyboard and the screen, I believe this can create more damage than it removes. The extra layer will simply increase the amount of surfaces which can come into contact.

As for the trackpoint, I think that there is a difference depending upon which of the trackpoints is used. Apparently the domed, rugged trackpoint ( where the center is the Highest point) causes the least amount of contact if any, whereas the inversed dome, smooth trackpoint ( the centre is the lowest point) is likely to cause the most contact.
