1GB ram = 1022MB?

#1 Post by dclee012 » Thu Jun 17, 2004 12:39 pm

i have 512+512 on my t42. however, it gets counted in most system-info apps as 1022MB
is this normal? could it be 511+511 (kind of like how some cpus are actually 1.699 instead of 1.7, etc or hard drives being 1,000,000 bytes and not really 1gb)? or.. could one of the pieces have a bad memory chip and totals 510mb? not that it totally affects performance, but it is very curious..

Thats quite normal, some programs don't add one to the figure for each module to make it the 'correct' value. Therefore each 512MB DIMM is registered as 0-511 then the second 512-1022 (511*2). It is for all intents and purposes 1024MB though. (the first meg is marked as 0-1024KB)
