Pre-installed Software

#1 Post by tp42card » Thu Jun 17, 2004 10:54 pm

Can anyone shed some light on some of the pre-installed software that IBM includes with our notebooks and whether we really need these or not?

More specifically, what exactly is the Sonic Update Manager? What does it do and do we really need it?

Thanks,

I disable that always. It has posed no issue and I don't like background processes running without my consent.

I don't use any of them either, with the exception of the DVD playback software.

Yeah, on a similar note, can the how does the recover program work? (The one that generates the 7 CDs of IBM utilities for recovery)

I'm getting a T41 soon and want to repossess some of that lost space immediately... I was hoping I could back that all up to one DVD.. As opposed to 7 CDs! (seems to be perfect. the IBM stuff is ~4.5GB)

i.e. if all the program does is generate .iso images and then burn them, then that's great.. I can manipulate that and throw them all onto one DVD. But if the program does it's thing in the background and then burns directly... Then this may be more difficult.
