video card question

#1 Post by arthur » Sun Jun 20, 2004 1:22 pm

Hi guys.
I have a question about video cards. I picked up this Thinkpad T42 2373CWU model. It says it has Rageon 9600 64 M. How does it compare to FIREGL 128M or even NVIDEO card?. Any noticeable difference?
thanks

The FireGL T2 is based on the Radeon 9600, but its drivers are optimized for OpenGL performance and stability.

As for nVidia cards, there are many types, so it is impossible to say how the Radeon 9600 compares unless you list a specific model.

I would suggest looking at a site like http://www.anandtech.com for reviews on different graphics products.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

How about a 415% difference in Half Life 2, an upcoming game. However, this is a best case scenario.

I so wish IBM offered the 128MB version of the 9600 as an option on the T42. That would have been my optimal choice as my graphics use will be in the gaming arena (although I had no interest in a true gaming laptop as I didn't want to give myself a hernia carrying it around). However, I understand that most of IBM's sales is to businesses, most of whom don't need that much VRAM for anything else but CAD work (hence the 128MB Fire GL option) so I understand them not offering it.

Actually the Fire GL T2 is pretty much the exact same thing as the 9600 with 128 VRAM. The only difference between the 9600 and firegl t2 are the drivers (some say the memory is clocked slightly lower but im not sure about this). IBM includes the workstation optimized opengl drivers. But if you install catalyst or omega drivers on it, you've just turned it into a full fledged 9600. But niether card own up to Dell's 9600 pro turbo which is just a higher clocked version of the 9600/fireglt2[/i]
