AHCI for SATA modded T43

#1 Post by dandreye » Wed Feb 08, 2017 4:08 pm

Hi All,

Moving some initial discussion where it belongs:

The T43 was the first Thinkpad designed for SATA, hence the (hidden) AHCI in BIOS and chipset.
How that works? No idea.
At the time the T43 came out, SATA drives were still very rare and expensive, so it was more user/budget-friendly to add the SATA-to-IDE chip and stay with IDE drives.
The SATA-mod removed that chip and replaced the IDE-connector with a SATA one, the way it was intended.
Everything else stayed the same, except there was now no more drive-capacity limit.
Is anyone aware of an ICH6-M-based laptop of any make/model with stock or modded BIOS capable of AHCI? If so I suppose it's something likewise doable on T43...

Many thanks in advance!

It's not.

Both RBS and myself have done quite some digging on the subject matter a couple of years ago and came back empty-handed.

Understood... just came across this in ICH6-M datasheet and thought if it happens to be the matter of toggling that value alone:

Thanks for the link but it seems he had AHCI option in his BIOS already unless I'm missing the point? Here:

I decided to go for broke and reinstall. I slipstreamed the text-mode Intel ICH6 (R and M) drivers onto a new Windows install CD. Then I changed the SATA mode to AHCI in my BIOS and ran Windows setup. Setup recognised my hard drive and allowed me to install Windows, and it's now running in AHCI mode, so I guess that part is success.
I'll give Intel Application Accelerator a try but that looks way too easy to have been overlooked by T43 owners for so many years.
