Sony/Matsui vs. Sanyo Batteries - Update
Hi all,
After all the talk of the wiggling Sanyo batteries on the T42, I decided to call IBM and see what could be done. They're sending me via next day delivery (due to the time I won't get it until Thursday) a Sony (FRU: 08K8195) 6 Cell battery which will replace my Sanyo (FRU: 08K8193).
However, when it comes to the 9 cell, the bad news is that the Sony ones are backordered. They won't be in for another three weeks. However, once they do come in, IBM will be sending one to me to replace my current (and 4 hour old) 9 cell Sanyo battery.
Just in case anyone else wanted to go ahead and do the same.

IBM ThinkPad T42 (2378-FVU), 14.1" SXGA, ATI 9600, 512MB, 40GB, DVD-ROM/CDRW, 6 cell and 9 cell battery, Waterfield bag (sfbags.com)
Thanks for the heads up! My T41 came with a 6-cell so I bought a 9-cell off eBay (NIB) for $89. It's a Sanyo of course and the rattle is quite irritating.
On your advice, I called IBM and they are shipping out a new Sony 9-cell tomorrow. Said I should have it Thursday and I should ship back my current 9-cell in the box, postage prepaid.
I called the 24-hour support number and the fellow who took my call had to check to confirm that they could swap it out (since it was not shipped with the system) but came back in the affirmative.
I'm more impressed with IBM service every day. Now if they would just replace my screen because of that stuck pixel...

Interesting. They told me that they were shipping me a 6 cell tomorrow and the 9 cell was backordered. Maybe he mixed it up. I'll be sure to let you all know thursday when I get it.
[Edit: I don't have any dead pixels
But I do have that strange gap thingie that all the 2378FVU's seem to have]

Hi Darren,
I don't have a digital camera on me, but I'll try to track one down from my friend. If you check this thread - http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1218 - you can read the current discussions on it.
Basically, as you look at the back of the machine when closed, you see that the gap between the LCD and the base seems to increase until you reach the midpoint of the laptop. Some others have mentioned that the optical drive gap increases too, but mine is ok.
As I mentioned I'll try to find a digital camera and post some pics on one of my websites. Either way, please let us all know if you have the same gap. It's something we are all very interested in. Otherwise this is a fabulous laptop, I really love it.

Jephy:
It's an issue that the gap gets wider, and at least one person with a T42 14.1" screen reports not having it.
Skywing:
The FRU fr the Sony 9 cell is 08K8201, as posted in another thread. Interestingly, IBM's website says this is Matsui and not Sony. Maybe they are the same company. Anyone know?

the ultrabay slim batteries are all made by sanyo. the sanyo main batteries seem to be made with "looser" tolerances on their plastic cases, allowing them to rattle around a bit. the sony cases fit tight and don't rattle.roxylo wrote:I just order my ThinkPad with additional 9 cell batt and ultra slim batt and they all are SANYO. I was wondering what are the reasons I should tell them to swap my batts with Sony? Is SANYO bad?
if either of your main batteries fit loosely then you should be able to call ibm and ask for replacements, specifying that you want sony-branded versions instead.
i just ordered a 6-cell sony main battery for my R50p.

I would recommend asking for the batteries by the FRU number. When I called tech support they didn't seem to know that there were two different companies making the battery. By giving them the FRU number you'll be guarenteed to get the Sony.flatdraft wrote:the ultrabay slim batteries are all made by sanyo. the sanyo main batteries seem to be made with "looser" tolerances on their plastic cases, allowing them to rattle around a bit. the sony cases fit tight and don't rattle.roxylo wrote:I just order my ThinkPad with additional 9 cell batt and ultra slim batt and they all are SANYO. Which one is the 08K8214? How does that one fit?
I'm guessing that's just the normal part number and not the FRU part number?

Drat, my battery is out of warranty!
I have a Sanyo 6-cell and it has the lousy fit reported here and elsewhere. Thankfully there's always thin foam to fix such things

I ordered it with FRU 08K8195 and they sent me the 92P1011. I think it's the same thing, the 08K8195 is a Matsui battery, the 92 is the Sony. They may be the same, but when I ordered the 08K, they sent me the 92

I just called tech support, and asked if I could get Sony 9-cell replacement for my Sanyo 9-cell....the guy on the line said that they will bill me for the battery, unless it is the exact same FRU# as the one I send back, so I wouldn't want to do that....is anyone else being told this?? I didn't think there was a price difference between the two...
