received new T42......one question

#1 Post by smitty » Thu Jun 24, 2004 5:44 pm

hello all,

First I like to say thanks because without this forums I would not have choosen the T42. I received the T42 and absolutely love the machine, well worth the price. The question I have is when I place the battery in, it seem to be loose. the battery is all the way in but tap the battery up and down it make a clackin sound. What I mean is when you hold the laptop, pushing the battery upwards it makes a clacking sound. Does anybody know why? Other than that, it's perfect....no dead pixels
Any comments would be appreciated. thanks

You probably have the Sanyo battery which just doesn't fit as well as the Sony ones. People have fixed it with pieces of foam, paper, etc..

so should RMA this laptop for that reason or shoud I just keep it? I am worried about getting a new one with dead pixels and other problems. Like I said, this one is perfect expect for the battery situation.

Call them and tell them to send you a new battery, and specify Sony

a couple of people have had success phoning IBM service and asking the battery be replaced with the sony one. Apparantly they ship you the new battery and give you a prepaid box to ship the other one back in. I would try this if I was you?

Which T42 did you get smitty?

I just ordered mine from Mr. Bill, I was able to land one of the 2373-3UU and I'm really looking forward to becoming part of the TP family.

Hope I get the Sony battery. You should switch yours out as well. A new Thinkpad should not have a rattling battery.

Hangfire :

I got the 2373-3XU through my school discount
did you mean that I should return the whole T42 or just swap out the sanyo battery for the sony battery?

thanks to all for your advise and comments

IRT the loose batteries..
its a trivial compplaint..
i take care of this by heating the "hook" very carefully and forming it slightly so that it is closer to the battery body..
1/2 mm or so..
works just fine..
:)

flatdraft, your 23733UU will ship tomorrow, friday..
uhmm, today, friday.. time for BED for me..

I RMA'ed both of my batteries, got my 6 cell yesterday. They said the 9 cell was backordered a bit. It rattles much less, but it's not a perfect perfect fit. Definitley better than the Sanyo though.

Specify either the Sony battery or get the FRU number.

morrow,

Thanks for the tip on the "hook." Changing to a Sony 9-cell fixed most up/down wiggle that I was having with the Sanyo 9-cell, but after reading your post I noticed how the end with the hook moved in/out slightly. Being someone who despises loose parts in my laptop I heated the hook (almost melted it ), shaped it and now it stays put nicely.

Thanks!

How can you tell which battery is which? I don't see any brand on my battery.

Click left on Battery Maximiser Gauge in task bar, select 'Battery Information' and then select 'Information'

Still not clear on this issue, do the Sony batteries come with certain models or is it random batteries with random ThinkPads? :?:

i think its totally random what battery comes with a given thinkpad. to IBM a 6 cell battery is a 6 cell battery no matter who makes it.

so I ma'ed the sanyo battery and just received my sony battery and though it is not a perfect fit, it still wiggles horizontally. It much better than the sanyo battery. Guess I will try the foam thing that others have suggested. Weird thing is my friend got a T42 also and his came with the sanyo battery and it fits snug, no wiggle at all. Any thoughts?, Did I get a defective casing?

it's "just" a battery... manufacturing tolerance are not that rigorous
