T43 Recovery not working

I got a T43, installed an mSATA SSD and installed a generic version of Windows XP. I wanted to use the recovery media to restore it to the factory state. However, once the boot window loads and I select the recovery menu, after a few screens I get an error message that it got canceled at the conversion phase. Is there any workaround to this?

Welcome to the Forum.
You're not the first one with this problem.
Happened already in 2007, see e.g. https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=47679

But it could also be that the Restore does not recognise the mSATA drive as being 'properly' formatted.
