Sound quality on T42(p)

#1 Post by edelrc » Fri Jun 25, 2004 2:48 pm

I ordered a 2379DYU before I knew this wonderful site. When it came I was all happy, however as soon as I started I noticed that the right speaker was much less powerfull than the left. I tested also the line-out, but there it was OK. I returned the laptop the same day.

However, now I star to think if it could have been a normal effect of the design of the 15" T42?! These are shaped different on the front (speakers) than the 14" T42.
It is strange because my A20p has 1watt too of strength but sound it is much powerfull.

Does any one notice a difference on sound strengh on right vs. left speaker on the 15"?

Does any one that had compared both 15" and 14" found any difference on sound strengh?

i think its the placement of the speakers. the right speaker soudns like its coming from the center and the left, from the far left. this is normal i think.

the left/right descrepancy might also be due to the vents on the left side, which would allow more sound to come out.

Maybe your windows sound settings were uneven. I don't use the built in speakers, I hooked up headphones for my desktop speakers.

Believe me, my right speaker sound was less powerfull. I not only checked windows, and different sounds and songs, but also asked other people without telling which speaker they did not hear as strong, and just after 2 seconds everyone pointed to the right speaker.

However, my concern now is if my 15" T42p ThinkpPad was indeed deffective, or it is just that since the front of this laptop is new, maybe some artifact is avoiding the sound to come out freely in all 15" T42. If you see the pics of 14'vs. 15", you have to recognize that the 14" seems better for sound reproduction, that is, the holes are pointed toward you, instead toward the table! I only use the internal speakers. If I were using external, I might already get a desktop...

To decide between the two laptop's sizes, I guess, it will depend on the answers of these two questions:
Did any one notice a difference on sound strengh on right vs. left speaker on the 15"?

Did any one that had compared both 15" and 14" found any difference on sound strengh in general?

Edelrc,

As dclee mentioned, it's the placement of the speakers, for the most part. In fact, when I had my 15" T42 before returning it, when I put it in the Dock II station, it hung about 3/4" over on the right hand side of the Dock II, whereas the 14" T42p aligns evenly on both sides of the Dock II. Looking at both models and lining the ports up, I noticed that most of the additional width of the 15" is simply accomodated by extra size on the right side. The motherboard, speakers, left-side ports, and docking port underneath, look like they are all shifted to the left on the 15" case. Hope this makes sense, but I think that's probably one of the minor design flaws of the 15" T42 models (if you're really concerned about the speaker sound quality, you won't get very good stereo separation and sound, even if you have evenly powered speakers.).

Looks like you might have to return the system and by a ThinkCentre desktop system... ;)

Daniel.

no fair!

#8 Post by edelrc » Fri Jun 25, 2004 11:55 pm

That's no fair!
I could no possible be acceptable what my 2379DYU had. It was very noticiable the diference of strength between both speakers. But if Conmee thinks the speakers are not at equally same distance from their edges, this probably may do that the right speaker not been in the 'holes area'.

If such, the 14" T42 may be better.

I don't think that a mild acceptable equally strength sound in both channel it is too much to ask for in a $3000 machine designed by the World best maker of laptops! But if no one has notice this issue before, I guess my laptop was indeed defective, because my friends did indeed noticed.

Lets see what I decide now...

Thanks so much to all for the posts.
