New T43p - Touchpad Problem and first opinion

#1 Post by wiesl » Tue Aug 09, 2005 12:53 pm

Hello!

Got my first (new) thinkpad yesterday - T43p - 2668 G7G.
(14.1" Hydis display, ALPS keyboard, Sanyo 9cell battery, 60GB Hitachi 7200 RPM, 1GB RAM, 2.13GHz, Atheros WLAN, Broadcom Ethernet, Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-822S, ATI FireGL V3200 128MB)

Looks pretty nice except I have a problem with the Touchpad:
When the notebook is cold touchpad is ok. When the notebook gets warm (after around 10 min of nearly idle) and you press the touchpad you hear some "plastic click" noise.

It looks like that the touchpad is a little bit (<1mm) higher than when it was powered off. So there might be some mechanical pressure when the notebook is warm.

Has anyone experienced such a problem yet?

Some first impression:
Notebook is really cool except the display which could have a better viewing angle like the 15" models. (BTW: no dead pixels at all :-) )

Ciao,
Wiesl

Try the TrackPoint pointing stick (red erasure). Most ThinkPad owners prefer it. It only takes a short time to get used to. I disabled my Touch Pad in ThinkPad Configuration the first week I had my ThinkPad. :D

I'm using the Trackpoint and not the touchpad. But it shouldn't be there, correct?

Hrm... I dont have that click noise... the touchpad is connected to the palmrest.. and I'm really not sure what would cause it to move up/down

How'd you find out what keyboard/display model you had?

Which model do you have?

What's the palmrest?

For the parts (Just enter your serial number):

For keyboard model there is also a good thread:

For display are some threads regarding Hydis vs. Samsung displays.

The touchpad is a bit creaky. It is mounted to the palmrest by four screws on the underside of the palmrest, and if the screws are not properly balanced in their tightness the pad can get warped and buckle a bit under pressure.

I don't know about the pad rising 1mm though after the machine turns on  I haven't see that happen on a T4x yet.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

Try tweaking the pressure by loosening and tightening the screws on the underside. Not sure what would cause the change when it turns on, heat shouldn't affect it, my guess is that you using it for a while affects it.

Good luck.

It is not a 1mm, it is smaller than 1mm (hard to estimate I would guess 0.1mm to 0.5mm, maybe up to 0.7mm). But it is enough.

There are a lot of screws on the botton. Which of them do you mean?

I will try it tomorrow.

Is there an explosion view available? (link)

Thanx.

Try this link ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 7r0700.pdf. Scroll down to keyboard removal, be gentle

Ok, loosening 2 keyboard screws a LOT helps a liitle bit, but it is still there.

BTW: It happens best when you press on the side of the 2 red mouse buttons (LCD side), the other side is ok. When you press on this side you can put the
touchpad down and there is some distance (around 0.5mm) between the touchpad and the black cover.

Ok, they finally changed the palmrest today, but it got even worser. Now when the T43p is even cold the touchpad makes some clicks when you press on it.

The technician says, this only happens when the keyboard is there. So they'll change the keyboard next. But I think this wouldn't help ...

Any ideas?

How hard are you pressing your touchpad? There's no reason to be putting that much pressure on the touchpad. Sure it moves around if you push down on it like you shouldn't be, but any plastic part will do that.

It happens under normal work.

Doing the same pressure on a hp nc8230 is just fine (you can nearly press as hard as you can on a hp nc8230 without any problems).

Ok, finally they changed the keypad (I got a NMB keypad :-) but I also liked the Alps) and the touchpad works now well.
