is 0.3Ghz and 1GB worth $400?
I'm looking at two T42p's.
* 1.8Ghz with 1GB ram - $2100
* 2.1Ghz with 2GB ram - $2500
Everything else is the same.
Is the faster 2.1Ghz CPU noticable in day to day work?
Would you spend the extra $400 for the faster machine?

jjlist, I went with the slower processor. I don't think there'll be a large difference..definitely not one worth $400 in my mind. What I'd do instead, if you want to spend the money, is get the 1.8 and add another Gig...and it'll still be cheaper than the 2.1 Ghz. Just my opinion!
Also for day to day work, it is highly unlikely you'll see any difference. If you are running a very demanding game then you probably would be able to see the difference. For day to day, save the money or put it to better use and get the 1.8

You will run CPU on lower speeds, you'll see - to save the battery. 0.3 GHz is nothing. But 1 GB of ram is cool, but for $400 ... hm hm ... too expensive I thinkjjlists123 wrote:I'm looking at two T42p's.

Yeah you won't notice any difference. When I was running CHC (Centrino Hardware Controller), I accidently turned off dynamic switching. So my CPU was running at it's lowest speed (800Mhz @ .700v) for a couple of days. And I was using my laptop like normal; checking my email, browsing the web, etc. It wasn't until I installed a game that I noticed the installer was taking longer then it should. When I looked at the CHC icon in my task bar I seen that the it was staying at 800mhz when usually it rockets to 1.8ghz during installs.
If I couldn't tell the difference between 800mhz vs 1.8ghz (and I know my PC pretty well) theres no way your going to tell the difference between 1.8ghz and 2.1ghz at least not during any day to day tasks. As for the memory, you can get an extra 1GB stick for around $90-$120 and install it yourself.

For day to day work with email, browsing, spreadsheets, presentations, word processing, even publishing, working on my 1.0 slate tablet is just as fast as my 1.8 T43.jjlists123 wrote: .....Is the faster 2.1Ghz CPU noticable in day to day work?

But I undestand the need or power (arrrg, arrrg). whether you use it on not. I have a car with top speed of 140mph and live in a 65mph world. So if I had el mucho ka-ching, would I spend the extra $400? Yes! Probably upgrade to 2 gig of ram while I was at it. Go figure....

Thats also a good point, poser....I think many here (including myself) did not distinguish the line between what THEY would get, versus what this individual would need.
Basically, poser is right, for day to day, neither the 3 Mhz nor the 1 GB will do any good. BUT if you do "push" your comp, the 1 GB is probably much more useful than the 300 Mhz.

It depends on his needs. For some mathematical applications and computations as in MatLab etc. 0.3 and 1GB may mean a couple of saved hours. But for normal use it is no difference at all.STS06 wrote:Thats also a good point, poser....I think many here (including myself) did not distinguish the line between what THEY would get, versus what this individual would need.

Thanks to everyone who replied.p0ser wrote:I think if you're just deciding between more ram vs more cpu then go with ram. In most everyday situations though its just as meaningless to have 2gb over 1gb ram as it is to have that 300 extra mhz.
I will go with 1.8Ghz and purchase extra RAM. I run a lot of vmware images and need the extra memory room.
Thanks again.
