Annoying Clicking Sound Problem with T43p - plz help

#1 Post by hellicht » Sun Oct 09, 2005 4:41 pm

Hi guys,
I've just bought 2 days ago my new thinkpad t43p G7G. I was even able to handle the problem, which many do have with the heat and the loud fan. :)

But there is still something that really gets on my nerves. It is the strange klicking sound, which I do hear most of the time. It does not have anything to do with the soundcard itself. I do hear it every 2-10 seconds. Sometimes it does disappear for a longer time. It is not to loud but also not quit. I can hear it very well and it is making me crazy!!! The clicking sound seems to be somewhere below the keyboard.

It seems to me that this sound does appear mostly in the first 5-15 minutes after turning on the thinkpad. But I can't tell for sure.

I've read that somebody had the same problem, but the thread was closed or something...

I really do need help, because I don't want to return the thinkpad back   .

It is a HTS726060M9AT00.
But as much as I know, the hard drive device is placed on the right side? It seems to be that this clicking sound is coming from the left buttom side and it seems to sound so "plastic", not like a harddrive...

It's not coming from your left front speaker? Does it sound like material rubbing together or what?

Maybe it's just parts of your laptop rubbing together as it heats up (which I've never heard of happening before but is completely plausible although undesireable)
X31, T43p (on sale soon I think :( ), T400

Dear everybody!

This is my first post ever :-) so I'd like to start off by thanking all the many ThinkPad users, who share their knowledge and insight so kindly - I'm one of the no doubt many, many who have taken very much benefit of all your posts - before finally myself becoming a ThinkPad'er! :-)

With respect to the reported intermittent clicking noise, potentially coming from the 7K60 (7K60: 7200 rpm/60 GB) Hitachi HDD (model HTS726060M9AT00), I have read a few places about a similar phenomena, but specifically related to the Hitachi 5K80 drives (5K80: 5400 rpm/80 GB). I don't know if the 7K60 drives sometimes exhibit the same clicking noise as the 5K80, but I suggest you check these links:

http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?p=753388

http://forums.storagereview.net/index.p ... opic=20147

http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 41008.html

I have a 5K80 Hitachi disk myself, and I have never observed any clicking noise or other abnormal behaviour.

Hope the above may be of some use!

Kind regards,

Johan

Thx for help Johan. But for me it was not the harddisk. I have already the newest update.
I figured out yesterday that if I turn off the mic then the clicking sound disappears. I really hope that it stays like that! And I also hope that this "small" bug will be fixed by IBM soon.

microphone

Your microphone problem reminds me of audio feedback I had on my T23. I recall having the microphone and speaker on simultaneously causing high-frequency noise and feedback. I wasn't running any audio problems, so it took me forever to figure out it was the mic. Turned it off and the problem went away. Then at some later point I reinstalled the OS and never again saw the problem.
