Remove and add data on HD

#1 Post by jmt » Sun Jan 01, 2006 5:39 pm

I'm going to replace my HD in my T-42 with a larger, faster one. Are there any instructions or directions on how to remove all data from the old HD and put it on the new HD?

One easy way is to purchase an ultra bay hard drive adapter and put the old drive in that to access the data.

Another way is to network the ThinkPad with the old drive to another computer, copy off the required data, install the new drive and OS, network the new system back to the other computer and recover the data.

I have used both methods successfully. ... JD Hurst

Get yourself some cloning software, I have used Norton Ghost, worked fine for me, others here like some of the other brands. Make yourself some recovery CD's too, just in case. It really is not to complicated. You may also be able to use a usb HD enclosure to copy the drive contents, but I am not well versed on that. Hopefully someone else can offer more info. :)

Are you talking about a blank HD or one with the OS installed?

Third party software like Ghost (and many others) are very popular for this but are usually not free and would require you to use a 2nd HDD adapter or external enclosure to perform this on your notebook; however, it can be more easily done on a desktop PC using inexpensive 3.5"-2.5" adapters. If your machine is equipped with a CD or DVD burner, you can use IBM's Rescue and Recovery to backup your old drive and restore it to your new drive. There are many other methods, it mainly depends on the equipment and software you have available or willing to buy. A USB external enclosure to fit your new HDD can be had for as little as $10 shipped off eBay and elsewhere.

You can do this if you have a CD Burner on your machine too. That is how I have done mine. Ghost is around 50$.

Thanks for all the ideas. The Ultrabay option sounds like it might be the easiest although not the least expensive but a place to start. Below is what I found on the Lenovo site. As you can see it has T40 on its description. Do you know if it will also work on a T42?

This is also a blank drive without an operating system. Can I remove all data including the operating system from the original hard drive, now in the ultrabay to the new hard drive in the hard drive bay?

The ThinkPad 2nd HDD Adapter for Ultrabay Slim gives you maximum storage flexibility enabling you to add a second ThinkPad notebook hard disk drive to any Ultrabay Slim modular bay. With the second HDD in your Ultrabay Slim, you have the fastest way to back-up key applications and critical data.
