Rescue & Recovery 3 starting instead of my windows xp
Hello,
I've occured a problem with my T42 (with R &R hiddedn partition).
Installed ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery v. 3 which took lots of time
and after install I am unable to boot my windows xp.
I am using linux grub to boot either ubuntu or windows xp
R & R destroyed my grub. After reinstalling grub from another linux distro I can see my grub menu again (unchanged as it's stored on
another partition on the disk) but even though I select "windows xp proffessional" which points to (hd0,0) where WINXP *is* installed
I am being booted to rescue & recovery.
Linux is installed on /dev/hda6
NTFS partition (with windows xp) is installed on /dev/hda1
BOOT.INI on /dev/hda1 (NTFS win xp) has a modification date as of when I was installing R &R but it doesn't seem to be changed at all.
Maybe there is a file which I need to delete in order to boot windows
instaed of R&R ?
I think this is a windows booting problem, not grub as it points and loads the right system from the right partition.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Here is someone with exactly your situation. He used the fixboot command to repair Windows.

If you have access to a Windows XP install CD, boot it up and choose Recovery Console. From there you can type fixboot c: to repair your Windows boot record (assuming it is on drive C:).
There is a way to install the Recovery Console on your existing drive. Check: Start > Help and Support, then type Recovery Console in the search box for more info.Windows Help and Support wrote:Example
The following example writes a new partition boot sector to the system partition in drive D:
fixboot d:
Note
Using the fixboot command without any parameters will write a new partition boot sector to the system partition you are logged on to.

Get your hands on any application that can change the active partition since this is what you need to change.
It is late at night where I am from right now and I haven't read your post carefully but I hope I haven't "guessed" wrong.

I've decided to reinstall my laptop from scratch.
My windows partition was 10GB and it was not enough.
Now it's 4gb hidden partt, 4gb+1gb linux, and my windows
xp partition got the rest. I hope not to see "low disk space" soon.
I read your the first post to use fixboot as even I did restore
my laptop from R & R partition it didn't boot.
I run fixboot and then fixboot c: and also fixmbr?
Don't remember exactly. I'm sure I did it wrong as it didn't help.
Now I'm using grub for booting into all (hidden part as well) my
systems.
Using system update 2.0. Question: Should I install R & R 3.0?
I haven't created recovery cds yet in case my disk gets damaged.
Will it destroy my mbr again? Will try... It seemed to be the 'boot' partition problem.
Once again, thanks!

Personally, I wouldn't, and I haven't. I installed R&R 3.0 when it first came out, and it went alright. Later I had to restore factory contents do to other problems I was having not related to R&R. After I restored factory contents, I did not upgrade R&R again. I do not use R&R anyway except to boot into the service partition. Staying with the version my ThinkPad came with might prevent possible version incompatibility problems down the road.mirobe wrote:Using system update 2.0. Question: Should I install R & R 3.0?

Make the Product Recovery Discs ASAP. It is your safety net. Also you should be making regular backups of your hard drive so that you do not lose important documents, and so that it won't take so long to bring your system back up to date in case of a major problem. I do not recommend R&R, as it is too slow and it does not do a verify of the backup. Some people recommend cloning the drive and that is a good method. I have also used Stompsoft Backup MyPC with good results.
