? about ordering the TrackPoint Cap Collection
I have a question about the Trackpoint Cap Collection
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-53765
http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/ ... p/_73P2698
So, apparently there are 3 styles of trackpoint caps, and this collection has two of each of the three styles.
What I was wondering is, when I order my laptop, whether it comes with (at least) one of each of the other two styles -- or is ordering this collection the only way to acquire the other two styles ?
(I had checked the tabook.pdf and didn't see any mention one way or the other about this)
Thank you for your help

Not really, in my experience. I'm currently on my 2nd cap (since last Oct.), and this one is about to wear out too. I think it depends on which cap you use, too. The "default" one they come with seems like it would wear out more quickly than the others (and this is the one I prefer and use).Matt_ wrote:Thank you for the replies.
Since I've read elsewhere on this site that the caps just about outlast the laptop, it sounds like I can save myself the $10 by passing on this.
You know what's funny.. I was about to start a topic on my cap changing habit when I saw this thread. I really like the original IBM cat tongue one and that one wears out really fast. It loses the nice feeling it has within 2 weeks. I can see the others ones lasting months and months but the cat tongue one doesn't. How often do you guys change yours and which ones are your favorite?
BTW I bought 20 of the cat tongue ones to satisfy myself.

You should be able to "rejuvenate" the 'cat tongue' style fairly easily. Go to a sporting goods store that stocks a bunch of pool/billiards stuff. A common device in pro billiards is a "tip scuffer," a little metal thing about the size of a lady's lipstick container that has a spiky end to it. You put the end against the leather on the tip of the pool cue and twist it to help rough up the tip so it takes chalk better.Daniel wrote:You know what's funny.. I imagine that this would help scuff up the trackpoint head as well.
then again, the things are so [censored] cheap you could just keep buying more.

i don't know what to add except the tip scuffer probably won't work..
the new style caps are great..
the caps supplied with a new thinkpad are a cats tongue and a concave..
a convex is fitted to the thinkpad itself..
they last a whole lot longer than the old cats tongue and if you like the old cats tongue better get a bunch..

I'm glad I started this thread because it straightened out a misunderstanding I had. I had read comments where people were talking about how long their trackpoints last(ed), and I assumed they were talking about the caps.
I appreciate all the replies -- if some of you are saying that you're already replacing them, I'll go ahead and buy a set with my order to be on the safe side.
I'm interested in trying out the concave one, though I'll also be curious to see how the convex one compares to what was on the dell laptop that I owned for a short while; that one was uncomfortable to use because it was like the eraser on the end of a mechanical pencil.

Can a certain style be ordered individually ? The only thing I've seen so far on ibm's website is a set of two of each of the three styles.and if you like the old cats tongue better get a bunch..

i used all types and settled on the convex version..

Hey guys, are these the Chinese Trackpoint caps or the Ethiopian ones? I mean I think this is really important - I find I write better in French with an Ethiopian Trackpint cap but when it comes to Serbo-Croat, nothing beats the ones coming out of Japan - finest Colombian Poly-Vinyl, exquisitly moulded - my finger hasn't been the same since...

Just got back from the UK - as with most things German, driving the Golf was a pleasure (considering the 2400klms we did) and I've decided that today is RELAXATION before going back to work (did I say work?) tomorrow. I fly back to the UK Wednesday, for reasons you already know, and it's getting to be exhausting one way and another - just thought I'd reply to a few posts to see who's actually awake !

https://www.compu-lock.com/tbezel.asp has been recommended for ordering the travel bezel. Recently I was browsing their website to see what else they sell. Over in the left-hand column if you click on "TrackPoint Caps" it looks like you can order just one style (it comes as a package of four) instead of having to order a trackpoint cap from IBM and being stuck with the other styles that you might not want.
