cable lock doesn't fit

#1 Post by joefosho315 » Sat Aug 21, 2004 1:33 am

Ok so I recently purchased a T42 and also purchased a Fellowes motion sensor alarm cable lock. It turns out that the cable lock adapter will go inside the lock slot in my ibm, but will not rotate completely to let it snap in place like it should. Does anybody have any idea what I'm talking about? Do other locks fit in there fine?

Well, the Kensington locks (that's the standard) don't need to rotate to lock - the just open up inside the slot when you relax pressure on the lock mechanism (like a flea/tick  )

Do you have any of the penny-sized plastic spacers on the lock? That can create problems with some laptops.

Just beware with the Kensington locks, at least the standard ones with
a circular type key. It is possible to open them rather easily!

I read about this recently, the article did not give the exact method
used only the implement used, a Bic pen.
It took me about 10 mins to figure it out and open a Kensington lock!
Rather scary.

I use one of the Kensington Combosavers now, which is a nice combination type.

I just found a Slashdot article (http://slashdot.org/articles/04/08/09/0 ... =1&tid=218) on this ease of breaking a Kensington lock and quite frankly it upsets me. I am going to college and taking my T42 and I would want a lock that actually worked and not only served a visual detterent.

P.S. From what I read on the Slashdot forum on the article above, the combination locks also are easy to open.

Oh dear! I better check that.

At the Uni where I work, we have some locks which are called
Slotlox I think, made by Slotlox? (we use them for TFT's in our pc labs)

They have a thicker cable than the Kensington and use a small brass
padlock at the laptop end. Not as pretty as the Kensington but I think
they are more secure.
