1400x1050 or 1024x768 resolution on a 14" T42?

#1 Post by rocketman » Wed Sep 22, 2004 12:10 pm

I'm pretty much ready to order a T42, the model I'm considering is the one with the 14" display with 1400x1050 resolution. I'm a little nervous that fonts may be kind of small, I know that there are also T42's with the lower 1024x768 resolution.
My question is how do you find the 1400x1050 resolution on the 14" display or do you think it's better to have the lower resolution on the 14" T42?

I have the 2378FVU with 1400 resolution and the fonts are very crisp and sharp. If you can't see something too well, just increase the font size. With Mozilla's Firebird browser, you hit Ctrl and + or -.

You can also change the Windows theme to make the program window fonts larger.

And if it is still too small, you have the option of going down to a lesser resolution. Why limit yourself to 1024x768?

I got this thinkpad after using a PowerBook. The resolution on that 15 inch widescreen was ~1200x800, with fonts being very large, and not very crisp. It was a big change going to the ThinkPad but I'm not having any problems with it. Go with the 1400 res.

I can certainly second the positive view of the 1400 x 1050 screen. I too was concerned before I got my T40 but once I fired it up I found that the crispness to be exceptional. I have never gone back to lower resolutions except for some occasions when I have to test what someone else is seeing at lower resolutions in some of our applications.

A third from me. 1400x1050 is perfectly fine for the distance you normally are from the screen. Also, if you get a 1024 screen and ever see a 1400 screen, you'll be jealous. :D They look a lot better in my opinion.

Gotta be 1440. It's crisp, clear, and has enough real estate to put up 2 documents side by side or a large excel spreadsheet without scrolling.

You can always lower the resolution or increase text size in various ways, but with 1024x768, you're stuck with it.

I couldn't use a 1024x768 anymore. I need to see the entire document to get my bearings.

I know what you mean. My T40 is in EasyServ for a power problem and I'm back to using a 600X. The 1024x768 is 'making me crazy' :-)

Hi,

After looking around for a while, I think I will be getting the 2378FVU soon. I would like to know if the fonts stay crisp when switching from the 1400 to 1024 or lower resolution. I have worked with max res of 1024 and it looks crisp and easy to read, but when switched to 800x600, the fonts get blurry. Can someone with the 2378FVU tell me what to expect?

Thanks in advance,

t9

It will get blurry like all LCD. Nothing you can do about it.

I also recommend the 1400. I like it a lot.

RCube is right. LCDs are meant to display only one resolution clearly. Anything lower than the native spec will be blurry, and anything higher won't display properly. I think a 1400x1050 resolution is perfect for a 14.1" and 15" screen. The only reason you would get a lower resolution is if your eye sight isn't the greatest.

Yeah I recommend the SXGA+ resolution.

When I bought my T42, I too was worried about the text being too small. To remedy this, you can either increase the DPI of Windows to 120+ (I would recommend it at 124, since that is how many actual dots, per inch, are on the LCD screen; however I don't use this since it makes some icons blurry) OR you can just set the font size to Large or Extra-Large (while retaining the small icon sizes).

I'm on the verge of buying a T42p also. At 1400x1050 resolution, is there much difference in readability between a 14.1" and 15" screen?

Like everyone here, I would like to recommend the SXGA display which is what I have on my T40. My problem now is I've been so spoiled by it, I'm ready to get a 15" T42 so I can go with an even higher resolution. I like seeing as much as I can on my desktop also.

SXGA+ would be the way to go.
