Is there an International Warranty?
How is the warranty on the T42? Is it good internationally? I'm going to be in Japan for 2005-2006. Will I be able to get my IBM serviced at a local depot (assuming that they have Japanese depots) or will I have to send it back to the US?
Hi teknerd122,
IBM Japan has service centers. Whether or not they will honor the international warranty of your US purchased (I am guessing here) ThinkPad is something you have to check beforehand. But I guess that it will be honored alright.
Where in Japan shall you be for 2005-2006?
Regards
Shoaib

All T42s (models 2373, 2374, 2378 and 2379) are covered under the IBM International Warranty Service.

The only additional consideration one should be concerned with is the duration of the warranty. Type 2378 T42s only have a one year warranty and one of the first things a new owner should do is increase the warranty to at least three years.

Adding two additional years of coverage for $112.20 is an absolute no-brainer and serious consideration should be given to maxing the warranty at five years for $296.65. (I have on my type 2373 T40 for $187!)

As far as I know all IBM ThinkPad warranties are global. Have taken several TP's to friends in Japan. The American (U.S.) keyboard is all the rave and most Japanese enthusiasts would give their left nut for one. They take their Japanese keyboard out and use the American one. The larger space bar is one of the biggest reasons. It doesn't matter that exteraneous keys are different. They won't remap them....they just know what keys are which. Just taking some keyboards over there make great gifts! By the way, warranty service in Japan excedes the same service here in the States. They go way out of their way to please customers whose machines are still under warranty. It is not unusual to hear stories about personal deliveries from IBM reps to a person's place of business and the exchange of business cards rather than shipping the TP back to the customer. This ensures future sales and word-of-mouth sales. Personal contacts are the foundation of successful Japanese business and makes perfect sense. You don't hear of the Japanese complaining about mediocricy like you do here in the States.
I should also say that the Japanese take care of their TP's much better than we do. Most place some type of cloth on the keyboard (like a lens cleaning cloth) before closing the lid and many use a "skin" over the keyboard. If you go to any computer shop in Akihabara (electronics town of Tokyo) for instance, you can find the exact "skin" for your laptop's keyboard and palm rest. Wish there was more access to these over here. Would really be great to keep grime and spills out of our 'puters! I'm rambling now so I'll quit.
