Looking for best performance possible from new drive...

#1 Post by paul_1011 » Thu Apr 05, 2007 12:03 pm

I have a T43 2668-F5G which I have been using for some years and I really like it.

About 3 months ago I upgraded(?) to Windows Vista and it has been quite a miserable experience, my laptop just isn't fast enough to make it a satisfying experience.

So I have decided to go back to Windows XP next week. While I am there I have decided that I will put a new hard drive in to get the best performance out of the system possible. If I can get another good 9-12 months out of the system I will be really happy with that.

I accept that I am going to have to put up with the 2010 error and given that I hardly ever shutdown, it shouldn't be a problem.

I am not too bothered about capacity, though 80gb+ would be nice. Accordinding to device manager there is a HTS541060G9AT00 in the machine at the moment can anyone recommend a drive they have had good results with with performance being a key factor?

Thanks for your help :)

I can't speak for other drives, but compared to my previous Toshiba 4200rpm 60giger, my 80gig Seagate momentus 7200.1rpm harddrive is out of this world. The harddrive was no longer the bottleneck. Loading times are faster.

80GB Hard Drive Seagate Momentus 7200.1
128MB ATI FireGL T2 GPU
9 Cell Extended Battery

I don't know if the Seagate 7200.1 series are usable in T43's, but you'll find a link to a comparison of this drive against other 7200 rpm drives here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=37543

Try search the T4x forum for "2010"... :(

Kind regards,

Johan

I think 7K100 100G is the one you want. The performance is better than 7200.1 and no 2010 problem(after upgrade IBM firmware).

thanks all for your advice. I have just ordered the 7K100 100G drive today.

I will probably upgrade to a T61 a few months after it becomes available, but hopefully this will give my system a bit of a boost in the mean time.
