Thinkpad T4x cases? which ones are the best.

#1 Post by RaysMD » Mon May 24, 2004 1:02 am

To start off, I have a spireusa "Endo" bag. It's a messenger bag with a sleeve that protects the Thinkpad. The only gripe I have about it that when I carry it using the carrying handle instead of the shoulder strap; the bag is off balance.

http://www.spireusa.com/images/pns/EN3MID_500.jpg

I prefer the non-steal me type of computer cases. Anyone else want to chime in? I'm also looking for a new case. So please chime in with some pics.

I would go for one of the Tecair cases! http://www.coluco.com/tecair/index.asp

i have this one
http://www.coluco.com/products/new_york ... deshot.jpg

it's awesome and also expensive, but it has a kind of "Airbag" for your Notebook / TP

ThinkPads are built like bricks - I wouldn't worry too much about the bag, as long as it provides at least some protection. I carry my T41 around in my Samsonite backpack in the laptop sleeve pretty much every day, and it still looks brand new after 7 months.

Weight?

#4 Post by feamster » Mon May 24, 2004 7:09 am

When looking at a case, look at how much it weighs.

What, you want a 4 pound bag for your 5 pound TP? Suddenly you have a 9 pound brick. The lightest I've seen so far is 11 ounces and basically all neoprene.

Please don't post pictures in the forum. Post a link to it instead. Some of us have limited bandwidth, and a picture such as you just posted makes it hard for us to follow the forums.

Thanks.

Nonny -> I realize it might be tough for you "slowpokes" to browse graphics-intensive forums - but fast connections are becoming so easily obtainable and affordable, that the number of people using broadband connections today, FAR outweigh modemers. Don't you think we should obey the rule of majority here :)
It might take you (one person) a small amount of time to load a picture, but if images are external, think about all the broadband people (a lot) here who has to click, load image in another window, wait, close window - that takes time too - and you can multiply that time by the number of broadband people visiting this site.

Oh well, back to the topic ->
I have fallen in love with crumpler bags (http://www.crumplerbags.com/), and have consequently bought a crisp suit for my laptop - it's roomy, fashionable and very durable.

I just picked up a black Data File Jansport bag from TJ Maxx for $22 for the T42 I ordered. It was regularly in the $80 range so I feel i got a great deal! It has the shockshield on the bottom which looks like it will protect it nicely.

PS...Nonny...time to spend some money on your internet connection. That was a small pic he posted which caused no issues for me!

Brenthaven (I never heard of them before) has some bags on the IBM site:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/accessories/cases.html
I've never seen them, but it looks fairly well contructed. btw, that spire bag looks like it has a shoulder strap... there's a buckle for it at least?

The Brenthaven Slim Case is made from virtually indestructible military-grade Ballistic nylon. The centerpiece is a removable computer protection sleeve that is padded on all (6) sides that adds to the protection that the case offers. The main section also contains several pockets for files, PDAs and other accessories. The adjustable length shoulder strap design is contoured and padded. This combined with offset D-ring, helps to shift the weight of the bag from the shoulder to the hip and provides outstanding ergonomic balance. Brenthaven cases deliver performance.

Weight, weight, weight! I used a Targus laptop bag for 1 trip....... the bag was almost as heavy as my rollaboard! So now I use a lightweight padded sleve bag with a shoulder strap (Bill has some nice examples on the Thinkpads.com site). I figure I'm not planning on dropping it from any height but do want minimal protection against minor bumps, bangs, scuff and scrapes.

I use IBM's very own Nylon TP bag, it is very durable, looks ThinkPad like, doesn't weigh that much and is more water resistant than its Leather brother. I am picky and like to keep things consistant, so I have IBM mice, external monitors, keyboards, external floppy drives, etc. Most of them I felt were better or just as good as any other manufacturer making the same thing.

The IBM Nylon bag is only $49. It also has a cusion system that IBM claims absorbs four times the shock than other cusioning systems from other manufacturers, when you see you may believe them :D Anyway here it is...

I use a Marware sleeve made for an Apple 15" Powerbook, but it fits the T41 just fine. The quality is great.

Currently I have the IBM nylon case. I’m very satisfied with it. I can easily fit in two TPs, and has enough folders and pockets. BTW, three new IBM carrying cases have been released: Expander, BackPack, Leather Attache. They are not listed on the accessories site yet, but if you click “Display my accessories” you will find them. They look pretty.

Some people are still living like the last century. I haven't used a modem in years...it's an obsolete tech IMO.

As for pics, you can set the IE to not display pics.

Although it screams "steal me" I'm a fan of this case.

I looked into this, as I don't have a Thinkpad either....i just went into the product pages, typed in the model number of the one I'm getting (in this case, 2373-GVU) and theres a link for accessories and upgrades:

http://www5.pc.ibm.com/us/products.nsf/ ... source=CCE

Look a little down the page and you will see them. However, clicking on them for a more detailed description (and hopefully pics) gives "Page cannot be displayed" for now...

i use a notebook sleeve made out of a material called 'zero shock'. It is similar to the memory foam that has become popular for use as bedspreads. It supposedly absorbs enough shock to prevent alot of minor body damage (but not drops). Laptop sleeves like this are popular in Japan and a few niche US sites carry them.

Could you give a link or specific brand and model #/name? This is the exact type of case I am looking for. Thanks!

computer bags are like a--holes..
everybody has one..
i seem to have accumulated a bunch..
(ok, not a--holes!)
but some of these are real antiques..
and what was once made for a full size thinkpad now works quite well for an X40 or 240X or the like..

when travelling (rare) my favorite bag is a junky looking thing with a biohazard label on it..

otherwise i use a leather thing made for an early T or A series..
my R50p fits just fine..

I found my bag.

http://www.timbuk2.com/images/275/commute/obssob.jpg

I'm a big fan of the messenger bags since they don't scream out "steal my computer." It's actually nice sized. Perfect for the Thinkpad and a pretty thick book. Just to give you an idea, the book is soft cover with over 1,100 pages.

Guess where I bought it? The Apple store. They're also available online.

I'm trying to find out more information on the Kensington Slim Contour case:

http://www.kensington.com/html/2037.html

I've found it for about $40 on Buy.com

I'm trying to find out its weight and whether or not it's water resistant and whatnot. From the picture it seems like it can hold alot, I don't think I'd be putting in much aside from my laptop, unless I use it as a saddlebag next year...

The best thing is to try and see the case for yourself in person. I've found that many things look good on the net, but when you see it in person it just sucks. The Tumbuk2 bag, doesn't look like much but it's really nice. The construction is just great. This spireusa Endo bag that I linked to in my first post doesn't even come close to this one.

At the moment i have the IBM Nylon bag, when i get my laptop ill see how i like it, at the moment i feel that it may be too big for my everyday use. If i dont like it ill either sell it here or return it and get one of the Crumpler Roll-O-Notes bags since the company i work for is a reseller of theirs so i get a discount.

The 15" fits a t40 perfectly; with a 7hr battery it is a very snug fit, without the battery (or with standard 5hr) fits perfectly.

Build quality is very good.
