Thinkpads in color

#1 Post by Udayan » Wed May 26, 2004 9:39 am

Has anyone heard about IBM coming out with a new T series based on Sonoma that will come in different colors in addition to black? If so, any idea when these are expected to come out (I seem to remember july/august). Any links to articles about this? I can't remember where I read this!! :x

Thanks.

ThinkPads in Color

By Q4 you will see the new Pentium M's some with 533Mhz Bus Speed and up to 2.13 Ghz based on 90nm. Then the new ThinkPads will show up. I was going to buy myself but will wait for 4 months or so for these. Found a killer deal on 2373KXU but will wait!

We'll always have the option for classic black though, right?

Why would you want something other than black?

I agree.. anything other than black wouldn't suit the current design. I'd like to see a revamped IBM design tho - something as nice as apples polished ibooks.. they look awsome.

I enjoy the Apple look (I carry both a T41p and a 15" Au Powerbook) but the IBM is the bussines tool and the Apple is the play tool.

Harping back to a long lost post on the old forum, I still rather fancy dark green/brown - a bit like the (dare I say it) HP colours of a couple of years back...

I found that kind of ironic because the IBM can probably play more/better games. :D

I guess if you define "play" as playing games....... :)

There was a hilarious thread about the possibilities of this over at Notebookforums.com, check out some of the designs (relax, I'm not going to post the pics) they came up with:

LOL. That’s pretty funny. I like the “See-through” one. However I don’t think IBM will go that far. They will probably offer no more than 3 colors. Maybe blue, silver, and green (I can't imagine ThinkPad in green) Anyway, I will stay with the classic ThinkPad black.

Piano black

#14 Post by gpvillamil » Thu May 27, 2004 12:39 am

IBM Japan has a really slick optional case treatment called "Piano Black", the main cover is ultra-glossy black lacquer.

This was available on a special model of the X24 and S30:

A few people in my office got these - they were very disappointed that the S30 was never updated.

Just a minor correction. That was an X30, not an X24. It was a 10th Anniversary Limited Edition model. And actually there was an updated S31 model.

I stand corrected! You are a true scholar of things Thinkpad!

Anyway, the "Piano Black" finish is one of my favorites. I spotted a used S30 in Akiba last weekend with the glossy finish and was very tempted... $890.

$890? That's a [censored] good price! In the US, Dynamism.com had it for a while for $2200, but IBM has discounted it. I also tried to get this limited X30, but it's been discounted as well. Anyway, this Piano black surface looks very nice. Would be great if these special models were available not only for the Japanese market but for the US too.

G-Man

my s30 is piano black.   everyone comments when they see it since it's smaller than an X40 and has the glossy lid.   at the coffee shop, i quickly discovered that chicks dig guys with small laptops.   lol :D

the best part about piano black is that you can put stickers on it and change your mind quite often.   ;)

Stickers! That's sacrilegious on such a beautiful surface.

(I have wanted an S30/1 for quite some time in the piano black.. I even accosted a Japanese business man in a Starbucks until he let me use it for awhile--of course I don't speak/read Japanese so the keyboard was pretty much useless but it sure looked pretty typing in Japanese on the screen.)

haha... perhaps -- but, i assure you that it's never an array of childish, multi-colored randomness.   if it makes you feel better, there aren't any stickers on it currently.   :P
