Best Wireless Broadband Router for T42 Thinkpad
Best Wireless Broadband Router for T42 Thinkpad
Dear Friends,
I have been reading reviews for wireless routers for the G standard and they all seem to be conflicting, with none being the clear winner. I have cable modem service at home. Can anyone recommend a wireless broadband router for my Thinkpad T42. I have the IBM standard B/G built in wifi from IBM and my IBM model number is the 2373JXU.
Regards
Sam

I have the Linksys WRT54GS and it has been nothing but awesome. The connection is always strong, and it was easy to set up. Check out this site here, and pick one of the first 3, or the Belkin a little farther down the page.
If i had to make a choice between 2, I would probably pick the Linksys, or the DLink at the top of the list.
The reason I think that you arent finding a clear winner, is because there really isnt one. They all perform well, and all will give you what you need. The ones at the top of the heap are similar enough, that it just comes down to preference.

Hello!
And welcome to Thinkpads forum.
As this was your first post ever, you might not have noticed the Search function up in the menu bar.
A quick simple search will yield many results, one just as you have described here.

I just bought a Linksys wireless router at Office Depot last week, it's a BEFW11S4, it was $59 and works pretty good, my T23 with internal antenna can pick it up with a fair connection even a couple hundred feet outside my house, and it's very good anywhere in the house, however the provided set up CD is the pits, if you follow the instructions it tells you a incorrect way of wiring it up, and even after I wired it up correctly it wouldn't configure the settings properly, however I went to the Linksys website and found a different downloadable set up utility that told the correct way to wire it up and it also configured the router correctly.

I am about 99% certain this is not the case, but just in case I thought I would mention that if you are perhaps into more complex scenarios and already have a router configured as you like it you might consider getting an access point instead of a router. Of course, if you just want an all-in-one device for both your wired and wired and just want one thing those wireless routers are the way to go. I will say one bad thing about DLink that tends to be more of an issue for people who keep things a long time. DLink seems to have awful long-term support for their products. After about 8 months they never ever release an update for a product, even if it has fatal bugs that cause it to crash randomly. Netgear and Linksys seem to be much better about this.

I have the WRT54G and WRT54GS...the G one kinda went crazy on my and I needed on equick so I bought the GS and used it. When the G came back from Linksys repair I flashed it with the Sveasoft firmware and am using that.
I liked both, but I use the G only b/c I got the sveasoft firmware on there. I've used other routers like DLink, and Netgear from home users, and to tell you the truth....I like the Linksys ones because they are easy to use, manage, maintain. Also they are relativley inexpensive. Not to mention the support of their knowledge base. Very clean and easy to use for anyone who wants to do something like open a small web server or for anything.

second that
I second that one, WGT624eriqesque wrote:My recomentdation would be the "Netgear WGT624"
just to clear something as far as mac is concern or linux while we're on it the routers (all of them) have a web based configuration which can be pulled up on any system.rocketman wrote:D-Link DI-624. I purchased it about 10 days ago to replace a netgear router, not a single drop since I've installed it. It's also gotten great reviews. Oh and even though it's great for Windows it even has software for the Mac platform which neither netgear or Linksys have.
Thanks
Thanks for all the great responses. You guys are awesome.
I've had a few routers in the past. I've had a Netgear 614 (don't remember the letters) but I remember it was cheap and I hated it. The interface was garbage and I just didn't like how it worked. I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 and loved it. Great B router. Some people are anti-Linksys, but it never gave me problems. I used it for PPPoE service and another DSL that didn't use that and they both worked flawlessly.
Just recently I bought a Buffalo Tech WBR2-G54 so that I could take advantage of WDS with an Airport Express (which handles my stereo, printer and Tivo - all wirelessly). The Buffalo works great too. I think I got it from Outpost.com for $19 after rebate. The Apple forums love it for it's WDS (the Linksys WRT54G can do WDS also, but requires the Sveasoft firmware).
Hope that helps.
