Thinkpad Speaker Volume

#1 Post by Leon » Wed May 26, 2004 6:10 pm

I have a 600X, and use it outside all the time to listen to music and internet radio from the built in speakers. Often I need to play it quite loudly, and it is up to the task. Here is my concern... considering buying a new T Series laptop, but have heard some opinions that the speakers are weak/not very loud. Is thst the case? If I am indoors, the 600X at maximum volume is actually too loud to be comfortable. What is your experience with the volume level on the T Series?

The T20 & T21 were awful. My T23 is much better - but not great.

How is the T42?

The speakers on my T41 are far louder than the ones on my friend's R40. I listen to music on mine all the time, sometimes using headphones and sometimes just the built-in speakers.

The volume on my T40 is excellent, as long as it isn't on my lap!

Just trying again... anyone with a T42 who also has/had a 600X that can give me a comparison of the speakers/volume/sound system?

I don't have my t42 yet but just out of curiosity if you listen top music that often off your computer and it is ab "important factor" in buying a computer to you, why wouldn't you just spend some money on external speakers. way better than any notebook speakers even reasonably priced ones.

good point! but, I used the term "music" loosely... actually, much of it is Internet based talk radio.... so, quality is not much of a factor... don't want to loose my portability... volume IS a factor......

i would not expect the T42 to be better than the T41 or T40..

and i would classify most thinkpad speakers as lo-fi generally, ok-fi in some instanses, very good in the case of the 770 X & Z, terrible in the case of the A20/21 series..
the T40 series is ok.. NOT hi-fi but good enough if you have a tin ear.. :D

thanks!! unfortunately, sound quality and volume is subjective (and I'm more concerned with volume than quality).... 600X has been fine for me in both respects for my needs and is my only reference point....

How about headphone/speaker jack quality? There is a HUGE difference when plugging into my SB Audigy compared to my Toshiba notebook.

According to the HMM, the speakers are the same for all 14.1" T40/41/42s. The 15" has different speakers. My 15" T42 is loud enough for me to be satisfied playing games in a quiet room. To me it seems the same volume that I typically set my desktop surround speakers to when playing. The think what is missing relative to my desktop is bass, of course, but that's to be expected since I have a powered subwoofer. :D

On my deskop I usually play with the Windows volume set to 90% and the speaker volume (the volume dial physically on the speaker) at around 60%. This achieves about the same volume as the T42 with Windows and volume-button volumes at around 90%. I think it's pretty respectable for an ultraportable laptop. If need more than that, maybe you should just get a pair of portable powered speakers.

My fiance has a Toshiba 5205 Satellite with Harmon-Kardon speakers in it. Now that you do not need extra speakers for...but it's much much thicker and heavier.
