the fist laptop IBM>Lenovo is also high quality?
The first* laptop sold from the Lenovo have the same quality of laptop IBM?
*T42/T43
I have seen the T60 and the Z and to me decidedly seems less sturdy.

really? i had a T42 and T41 and they were not as study as my T60. I can pick up my T60 by the corners (as a result of the internal rollcage) and not be worried (NOT that i do it). The palmrest area on the T42 was definitely not as firm as the T60. There was definitely some flex when you press down but on the T60 there's none. It's just solid. If you look at the movies showing you'll see there's padding under the palmrest on the T6x series vs non on the T4x series.

I can also confirm that the 14" SXGA+ T60p has better build quality than the 14" SXGA+ T43. The former doesn't have flex anywhere, however I found the latter has some flex on the palmrest as well as the battery area.
The T6 series don't seem to have the dreadful GPU loose problem, which means they are more abuse-resistant. Personally I consider it one of the most important aspects of a laptop (along with the appearance, keyboard/screen quality, battery life and the weight).

Agree with SHoTTa35 & ulrich.von.lich - The palmrest flex on my previous T43p was not very reassuring, while my T60p is much more tensile - that roll-cage really works!
T60F: (Integrated Intel GPU) - [Another T60 FrankenPad!...Different approach]
R60F: (Integrated Intel GPU) - [ThinkPad R60 15.0" FrankenPad]

Everything being written about T60 versus T40 really has nothing to do with the Lenovo transfer. I suspect that the T60 series has a more rigid case is the result of the normal improvement in design evolution. Just as cars designed in the 90’s typically were more reliable than those designed in the 70’s, each generation of PC should be better than the one it replaces.
A couple of points to keep in mind about the Lenovo sale:
1. The engineering team is pretty much the same who worked for IBM. ThinkPads are still designed in Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina.
2. It is quite likely that the T60 design was in process at the time of the sale to Lenovo.
3. Neither Lenovo nor IBM manufactures the ThinkPads themselves. Both companies employ contract manufactures based in China to build the machines. So do HP, Dell, Acer, and all of the other major PC vendors. I don’t know if Lenovo uses the same contract assembly vendors that IBM did. The relationships the PC vendor has with the contract manufacturer are long term. Having visited some of these contract assembly vendors, I can tell you that they have top tier process capabilities, as well as quality management processes. Their staff is highly skilled, and they have manufacturing engineers who know the designs inside and out to troubleshoot any yield issues that may show up.

I dunno. The 600 series were the most solid Thinkpads I have ever used.

people who design laptops get their orders from the top management and why they say, "cut the costs," they really mean it. Therefore the transfer from American owners to Chinese owners could be a potential problem.Robm wrote:My understanding is that Lenovo bought the IBM division so therefore, the same people that designed the T4x series are probably pretty close to the same people designing the T6x series
The T60 is certainly much more sturdy than my T23 and from what I read probably much better than T4X.
When I however compare T60 to T23 there is clearly deterioration in the keyboard build quality, the palm rest buttons and overall the volume, power and thinkpad buttons.
When people say that it is normal evolution to have studier computers they are a little bit mislead. For example I found many of the older Macbooks to be of much better quality than the newer ones. The 600 series was the strongest (as someone pointed out). The real question we should wonder is what makes company, whether lenovo or IBM doesn't matter, design a laptop as strong as 600 series and then design laptops such as T4x and T2x which have lots of flexing and MB issues. Where does this inconsistency come from?
I understand your point...and I came from the high tech field (specifically hard drives) originally but had to take a break (burnt out) so I know what you mean by "cutting costs" but most high tech companies nowadays regardless of where they are or you they are, put out higher quality product at a lower cost and what I mean by that is that their failure rates are much lower today than they were 4-5 years ago. Although you may think something is less robust....its failure rate I am sure is much lower.mattbiernat wrote:people who design laptops get their orders from the top management and why they say, "cut the costs," they really mean it.
