T42 Rapid Restore Ultra 4.0

#1 Post by mientras » Thu Jun 03, 2004 12:27 am

Sorry if this does not belong here - I see a section for Windows software but I do not know if it belongs there either.

I wanted to do a backup of the T42 image using Rapid restore using as the destination a network drive (on another PC). It asked me for the path, which I inputed on an IBM dialog Window that popped up.

Rapid restore Ultra 4.0, which comes with the TP42, then failed to connect to that particular drive. But I cannot find where to change that destination.

Every time I try to run it now, I get a message that states that "The backup failed because the destination network location can no loger be reached" - and no place to change the network destination.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I had once the same problem. If I remember correctly, I did the following:
reboot both PCs, check the network path, and then disable the personal firewalls on both PC.

I will try the suggestion - thanks. But what if I wanted to run backups to different network drives? It does not make sense - what i a network resource is unavailable but another one is?

This is true, I also missed the option of changing or adding network paths.

If you call or write to the IBM support, please let us know the result.

Sorry, I just remember:

I think I was able to change the network drive (only?) by deleting the previous backup on a specific drive.

I have nothing to delete - never got to do the backup as the drive never connected. The reboots did not work. I will try calling them or just using DriveImage.

Thanks for the tips

Another possibility: Make a backup on the local drive and copy then this local backup to the network drive (there is an option in RR 4.0 for that copy action).

This always worked with my system.

How would you expect to restore from a network drive in the event of a drive failure? Install XP first on the new drive and configure it? Then restore?

From what I understand - the IBM recovery environment (holding the Access Thinkpad button at boot) gives you access to the network and the net - without the need for the XP OS. Also - I could copy the image to a DVD and restore locally. But using a local USB 2 external drive will probably be best.
