T42 2nd Hard Disk Drive UltraBay Slim

#1 Post by sunjack » Thu Sep 18, 2008 2:49 pm

I bought one 2nd Hard Disk Drive caddy for IBM ThinkPad UltraBay Slim on eBay, then I install the Windows 2003 Server on another SATA HDD, which can boot my desktop properly. However, when I plug it into the UltraBay Slim, it can not boot my T42. The error message is that Operation System is not exist.

Does anyone provide some advice? Or anybody met this problem before.

Thanks

Could it be something to do with the SATA to PATA bridge in the caddy?

I believe that the SATA Ultraslim HDD tray is for a T6x, not a T4x. I have one of these trays and they work great for my T60. There is a tab of material at the end of the tray that prevents this tray from fully engaging into my T42P. The tray part number that I have is 40Y8725.

Yes, I believe the Lenovo- branded caddy has the extra pin but the aftermarket caddies don't so they will fit into the the T4x without a problem.

So in the aftermarket, there is a SATA to IDE bridge that allows these to be used in a T4x?

Yes, there is. I have bought one such caddy recently. It works flawlessly with T42 and any SATA drive. However it doesn't look to be an original IBM part.

I'm guessing you installed the OS from another machine which uses a different hardware extraction layer (HAL). That won't work, although the SATA adapter will work fine.

Can you provide a link, or some details about this aftermarket caddy? I'd sure appreciate it!

Here is the link to Polish auction site: http://allegro.pl/item437282797_nowa_ki ... _sata.html

I'm sure you can find something like this on eBay as well. Just type in "IBM" and "SATA" keywords for searching. For example, this one looks exactly the same like the one I have bought:
