I was wondering where I could find this info-- thanks!csv96 wrote:FYI, the DXU is on backorder everywhere. Expect to wait up to a month or even more.
DXU Backorder?
DXU Backorder?
I am about to order a T42, DXU tomorrow, on the phone from an IBM salesrep -- I just read that it's on back order...

This was in the confirmation email I received after ordering a 2379DXU:

Since ordering it, the Master Card discount seems to have been reduced from 15% to 5% also. They must have figured why give such a big discount when they don't even have TPs to ship.
Carl
It should be noted the IBM site I ordered it from showed 2 to 4 weeks, not 9 weeks like in the email they sent me after ordering it. I called to see why the misinformation and was told maybe I'll see it in 5 weeks. I'm not holding my breath.Order date and time: 06/02/2004 9:47:58 AM GMT
Estimated Ship Date: 08/09/2004

I think those ship dates are way off. When I ordered my first 2379DXU on 5/20 it showed a month and it shipped on 5/28. I ended up RMAing that unit because of a bad pixel and had it exchanged. My exchange unit (2379DXU) shipped on (6/5) the day after they recieved my RMAed unit at IBM...its in KY in customs right now.

Okay, from a different source, I have heard that the next shipment of 2379DXU's and 2379DYU's is leaving from Hong Kong on or before June 18th. So those with orders pending with IBM might be getting one of these.

I ordered a 2378DXU on 5/26. Initially the sales guy said it is backordered, and will take 6-8 weeks. The web order status page said 6/15. Then, all the sudden on 6/1, I checked the web status page and it showed "shipped express". It arrived shortly after on 6/2 - much sooner than I had expected. It was also shipped Overnight (Express), even though I had paid for Ground. Unfortunately, the mini-dock shipped separately via ground. My friend who ordered a similar system got his the same day. (We both ordered on the same day, although he chose 14" screen model instead)
Kangazoom -- so far, I'm really loving it! The 15" screen looks great. I have a Dell 2001FP 20" screen connected via the DVI port on the mini-dock as well, and the 1400x1050 screen on the laptop matches it nicely. I used to use a 15" 1600x1200 screen (as well as a 15" 1920x1200 screen on a dell) and found them too small. However, I really do miss the 14" form factor though. If they made the same unit with a 14" screen, I think I would sacrifice the flexview for it. Unfortunately, that wasn't an option for me - I needed a laptop quick, and didn't want to wait for a custom-built one. When I'm not lugging it around though, I really appreciate the 15".
Other than that, I've been really impressed with IBM's software installation. I've always completely re-installed every computer I've ever purchased, but this is the first one which I used right out of the box. IBM ships with a great tool too which lets users uninstall any of the programs on the computer easily.
Anyway, enough rambling - I'm really glad to be back on a Thinkpad again. I'm sure you'll be very happy with yours!

My 2379-DXU was ordered 5/31 with an estimated ship of Call with an entire ship by of 8/9. Then it changed to 7/7, then yesterday it changed to Customizing/Packing, then this morning the status is Shipped (no tracking number yet).
It seems like IBM is being cautious with their estimates. It seems like most people are getting their thinkpads in good time, hopefully this will happen with yours.

Thanks, that's what I'm hoping for. It's just so unbearable to be constantly checking the update status page to see whether or not it's shipped yet.
btw, have you guys seen the CNET site lately? they have a video clip of of one of their guys examining the t42. Now I really can't wait to get my hands on it!

Funny, they focus so much on the gigabit ethernet. How many people actually have a gigabit ethernet network?pennypacker wrote:btw, have you guys seen the CNET site lately? they have a video clip of of one of their guys examining the t42. Now I really can't wait to get my hands on it!

We have gigabit ethernet is some parts of where I work but the idiot who did the wiring used Cat5e instead of Cat6. The great thing about the GigE that IBM uses is that it uses the Intel chipset that is more common in server applications and supports Jumbo Frames. This allow larger packets to be transmitted and makes streaming of full resolution video possible.
On the otherhand, very few end users will ever be on a Gigabit network as usually it is server side only.

cat 5e is certified for gigabit but there is a substanial difference in real life application between cat5e and cat6. For a new installation to use cat5e verses cat6 is idiotic to me. Both conform to the 568a standard (gigabit certified) but at high frequencies, cat6 shines. In direct connect situations with minimal routing, you'll see substanial performance gains.JohnV wrote:cynic....cat5e is fine for gigabit. Our facility is certified for gigabit with cat5e wiring.

Here's a chart between differences (first I could grab.) Note the higher frequency response.

Hmmm. My DXU order status says that it was shipped on 6/7 though I can't track my order. My shipment type is 'N/A' and when I click the track shipment link I get a pop-up window stating 'Sorry. No tracking available for this order'. I wonder what's happening ...
My order did contain mutliple items (like a dock), though they haven't shipped. I wonder if this is the reason for the lack of tracking info.
