T42p and 2.5G processor
Hi,
I have a T41( I am a Thinkpad nut) and really likes it and currently bidding for a T42p laptop, many here recommend the T42p because it has an excellent LCD screen.
When I win I like to upgrade the processor to 2.5G at 400Mhz. I believe this would be very fast indeed, esp if I run on Windows 7 with 2 G. Can anyone here confirm this processor will work with T42p? Is is worth upgrading?
Thanks.

The largest CPU compatible with that machine is a Pentium M 765, 2.1GHZ.

Re: T42p and 2.5G processor
I saw a 2.5G at 400Mhz on sale at Ebay I assume it will work. Will the 2.1G work with T42p? I assume so.

Re: T42p and 2.5G processor
The 2.1GHz PM765 will work but it runs real hot. A 2.0GHx PM755 might be a better bet.

Re: T42p and 2.5G processor
Thanks chaps, best place to be.
I found the 2.5G at 400Mhz has only 512K cache, refer to this site:

That's Pentium 4M, not Pentium M (Mobile)...a completely different animal.

Do you have any experience with the PM765 in a t40? Would it do okay, heat wise, if I reset the heat sink with some high end thermal compound? Say arctic silver.sktn77a wrote:The 2.1GHz PM765 will work but it runs real hot. A 2.0GHx PM755 might be a better bet.
Does anyone know what the idle and max load temps for the pentium m 1.5GHz that comes with some t40's

Unfortunatley there is no such thing as "the idle and max load temps".mayfew wrote:Does anyone know what the idle and max load temps for the pentium m 1.5GHz that comes with some t40's
It all depends on environmental temperature, rpm, heatsink, and also place where you put your thinkpad.
My pentiumM 1.5 Banias was usually round 42-45° C when placed on a desk with 3000rpm, and idle.
Best regards
ThinkPad T42p 1.8 Dothan 2.0GB 120GB
ThinkPad T40 1.8 Dothan 1.25GB 120GB
ThinkPad T40 1.5 Banias 512MB 40GB

Thanks for the "idle" temp info, how about when the processor is at 100% load?
