Noisy T42

#1 Post by fireracer7 » Wed Mar 23, 2005 5:09 pm

Since yesterday, I have noticed my T42 to be quite noisy. I have not done anything different to it recently nor changed any components (all IBM software is the most up-to-date). I have noticed the fan has been running all the time and and a spinning/fan-like noise from the bottom right corner (under the right palmrest - possibly the hard drive). The noise from the right hand corner is much louder than the fan and more annoying (maybe something is constantly writing to the hard drive?)

Does anybody know what either of these two are from and how to possibly quite them? Thank you in advance!

Nope. There is nothing that I know of that is running which would constantly be writing to my hard drive. I am not even sure the noise from the bottom right corner is from the hard drive (I'd assume it is, though). Is there any way I can tell and resolve the problem?

The sound is still there. It sounds more like a fan than a hard drive spinning. Does anybody know what moving parts are in the bottom right area?

Bottom right hand bay houses the hard disk. If you post the model # of your ThinkPad, you could probably get feedback from people whose ThinkPads use the same type of HDD.

I have a 2373-3VU and a 80gb 5400 RPM hard drive.

Does anybody know of any software that you can monitor hard drive activity and "movement" with? Also, I have been reading that the embedded controller and BIOS upgrades can make the fan and other components "noisy" (by constantly running). Does anybody know if this issue has been resolved?

Yes, that is the hard drive in the bottom right corner.

Try running a DFT on the drive (Drive fitness test). It is possible that your drive may be dying, as normally these drives are pretty quiet, especially the 5400rpm mdels.

The laptop is less than one year old so I would hope that it would not be dying. How do I run a DFT?

I had the same problem with my T40, so I ran PC-Doctor that I got from the IBM support page. The hard drive passed all of the PC-Doctor hard disk tests without any errors. My drive continued to make noise and was actually vibrating the right side of my T40. I finally could not handle it anymore and replaced my drive with a new one and it is even more quite than when I first bought it. BTW - I had a 40GB 5400rpm disk.

Did you replace it or have IBM replace it with a new one?

My T42 is doing the same thing... not so loud however. i notice this happens only when the HD is sitting idle. its definitely the HD, like slow clicks... its only 6mths old, but i'm wondering if IBM will replace it on warranty? anyone have this replaced through warranty?

Thanks.

Currently I am in University and can not afford to be without my laptop. However, this summer I plan on calling IBM to report and hopefully have some issues with my laptop serviced (battery drains too quickly for less than 1 year in use; hard drive noise; DVD-RAM loud spinning noise). Hopefully these can be replaced under warranty.

I think that only battery can be possible..

I have a 3 year warranty with accidental protection; I don't see why all the components I listed wouldn't be fixed/replaced under warranty? If anybody has any experience with this issue, please respond.

IBM warranty replacement

Any clicking pretty much means that a hard drive is dying, although it can be a slow death. You get that same sound with desktop machines. Back up everything!

I support 70 IBM ThinkPads at work, although I'm new to ThinkPads and learning about them! They're great machines. I've had really positive experiences with IBM Support.

Call 800-ibm-serv for service. Have your serial no., machine type (4 digits), and model no. ready (3 digits). All are on the label on bottom of your laptop.
