My little collection

#1 Post by Pokrzept » Fri Jan 23, 2015 11:44 am

Hi all,

I've been lurking on forums for quite a while, and in a meantime I had a chance to gather few nice Thinkpad pieces that I'd like to present today ;-). My adventure with Thinkpadding began in 2009, when i bought brand new T400 that I still have in my collection. Soon after that I had oportunity to work on A22p and R50p in my workplace and since than I have fallen in love in in our beloved brand. Since I'm a big fan of High-Res FlexView screens I decided to gather most unique and powerful units of its time. Due to that after long 6 years T400 mentioned above is still my newest and most powerful unit in my collection  . So far I've got:

Image

1st row: X61s, X60
2nd row: T61 14,1" SXGA+, 760LD, 760ED, 340CSE
3rd row: T400 WXGA+, T601F UXGA, T60 15" SXGA+, R50p UXGA
4th row: 4 x A31p UXGA, T61 14,1" SXGA+

As an engineer I really do enjoy tinkering in those little fellows, and due to that there are few days in every month when I push my wifes nerves and room looks like this:

Unfortunately, the disease progresses and I'm still thinking about new collectables so stay in touch in case that JUDGEMENT DAY comes, my wife gonna change door-locks and throw all those thinkpads away ,

best regards,

Pokrzept.

That's a very nice collection. I wouldn't call it "little" by any means. :thumbs-UP:

4 A31p machines! Are they all fully functional? (two appear to have no batteries, but that's minor) I might want to procure a replacement for my own A31p with a failing motherboard and LCD... :P

And you've got a T601 Frankenpad - the ultimate sign of a Thinkpad enthusiast. :)

Three of those A31p's are fully functional with working batteries (2 main batteries ~~ 8 Wh left, 1 UltraBay battery produced in 2003 that still has 70% of its factory capacity  ). Forth unit became part donor since it has been like whimsical women, it starts whenever it wants too. It's is probably caused by an defective memory controller/slot - it does beep when I remove memory cards but it refuses to run properly and sometimes does not even try to POST. All of those three units have: P4M 2GHz, 1 GiG of RAM, DVD/CD-RW combo, IBM High-Speed WLAN cards (that refuses to work with WPA encrypted networks  ), Bluetooth module, ~~ 30MB/s transfer rate HDDs (that's a huge bottleneck but Samsungs HM160HC became extreamly expensive these days), clean and bright FlexView panels. I'm in love in those piece of hardware, even now I've got one running infront of me. I'll try to keep them running as long as I can, but they need some hardware improvements (2200BG WLAN, 2 GiG of RAM, faster HDD, PCMCIA USB2.0 cards).

Many of those units I've bought as not fully functional - blown fuse, SV password etc - but now they're mostly 100% functional, beside 340CSE that require new motherboard.

Very nice setup. Congrats! :thumbs-UP:

Your second picture reminds me of my own workspace on occasion...

Glad to see that the A31p bug is still alive and well with new members of this forum. It really brings me joy to see when other people have these oldies up and running.

Keep on ThinkPaddin' is all I'm going to say.

Lovely collection! And *little*... heh. Doesn't look small to me. I know you probably see others around here with some insane collections, but... dude. I wouldn't consider this small. Especially with those A31ps in the back there. A few of us on here would kill for at least one!

I also love that you're a fan of the 760. I absolutely LOVE the 760. I'd be using it in class if it was possible...
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

and yes. I am a bit of a lunatic.

I actually have an Atheros IBM-branded WLAN card in the A31p, that seems to work just fine with WPA/WPA2. It came from an X3x machine originally, but I don't remember the exact FRU / chip used. An Intel-branded card, like the 2200BG, will work as well.

The best pick - by far - for any of the old ThinkPads using mini-PCI standard:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833704061

It's available on Amazon in the U.S. for $20, don't know what the situation in other parts of the world is.

Hey,

thanks for your aid ! Just found one for less than 10 bucks - shipping included. Now i have to find modded BIOS with a whitelist removed 8). Unfortunately this piece of hardware seems to be pretty rare here in Poland, i could find use for three other units (both A31p's and R50p).

No you don't.

On A31p - as well as on R50p - the old "no-1802" hack still works like a charm.

Nice collection, and by no means any "small" collection. I have no A-series laptops myself, but it seems that those who have them, particularly the A31Ps, are very enthusiastic about them. And you seem to have enough machines to keep those going for years. Good catch!

And it's always nice to see other people's collections. That's my reassurance that there is nothing wrong with me, for having a ton of old laptops.
