Indeed it has been mentioned in the past that two A4 pages side-by-side are closer to 4:3 than to any form of widescreen. It is 1.4, which is about half-way between 4:3 and 3:2.
Whether it's more comfortable to view on a wide-screen or a tall-screen depends largely on the other components on the screen - gap between the pages, vertical toolbars, horizontal toolbars, other windows, etc.
