Pictures in signatures??

#1 Post by A31 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 1:53 pm

Would we be allowed to use very small pictures in our signatures?? Was just wondering. Thanks!

Why bother, the place looks so nice without them.

Admin mode on: Your signature, at several time larger than your post, is already excessive..... don't push it!

While I'm not too interested in avatars and images as signatures, I have been curious to know the reason why they're not allowed here. Is it a bandwidth thing or just the way it would look, or...? Just curious.

Both, really. When the forum first moved from a text-based format to phpBB, many members were still on dial-up. Downloading unexpected large images was not practical, so we instituted the rule that there had to be a warning message in the subject line and that images had to be <50k.

While the world has moved on and few of us are on slow dial-up any more, I personally don't see a reason to change that policy. A lot of images scattered through a thread overshadow the discussion, and as more and more of us access via a mobile device with download caps, a simple link is more useful.

As a mild example of how signature images can obscure the content: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=726506

It's not the worst I've seen in online forums; just one I ran into the other day while looking for some information.

That makes great sense and I agree wholeheartedly with your point about mobile devices as I frequently browse this forum from my Android phone - something I hadn't considered.

Thanks! :)

Oh dear... I see what you mean. That BMW E46 "Fanatics" forum does look rather messy with all those large images in the user's signatures. I can now see why we don't allow them on here! :D
