Hardware Configurations

#1 Post by DIGITALgimpus » Sun Feb 05, 2006 6:59 pm

I'd like to have a thread focusing on the specific hardware at play. Specifically this:

List for the following devices, specifically what you have, and temp when in use:

Wifi Card (PCI [0xc1] is close enough)
GPU (0x7b)
Hard Drive (hd temp you need another tool like HDTool, or NHC)

My working theory is that the majority's problem results from the southbridge not cooling properly. This is accelerated by the use of a WiFi card in close proximity. I'm interested if this is a common case (and others that may exist), and if the Intel card is worse/better than the IBM card. Also impact of HD temp.

Limit to these 3 things to keep the noise down

I'll go first:

Wifi: Intel 2915 - 49C
GPU: x300 - 49C
HD: HTS541060G9AT00 - 37C
T43 (2687-DUU) - 1.86GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 100GB 5400 (non IBM-firmware Hitachi 5k100) HD, Fingerprint Scanner, 802.11abg/Bluetooth, ATI x300

I have to agree that the PCI temp is due to the wifi card being almost on top
of the southbridge. I bought my laptop as an openbay and I was waiting for
a decent deal on a wifi card but I had everything else. I ran the laptop for
about 2 weeks without the wifi card. I can't remember for sure but I think the
idle temp was 47 before and 51 after the installing the card. I've seen some
posts where they ran a thin sheet of copper from the southbridge to the
GPU send some heat in that direction.
