my buzzing fan noise cont'd

#1 Post by allen » Thu Sep 27, 2007 10:16 pm

before i knew what the fan utility was, i posted this here:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=49828

now that i know, i think the rest of my Qs belong here.

my fan buzzes, loud. it didn't used to buzz like a pulsing robot sound at all, and after 9 months from new it started.

i have TPFanControl version 0.25beta svc installed, and it seems to be reading temps and controlling fans properly.

but, even at fan speed 1 if i go close i can hear it buzzing, it's ok for now, but i may have it looked at while my laptop's still under warranty.

i've searched up and down, and every post seems really outdated, it would be really great to have definitive FAQ and info pages setup. all the info here is horribly unorganized so far, leading to pages and pages of posts that are too much to read through for things not pertaining to your own system.

questions:
1 - what are safe temperatures? GPU? CPU?
i get GPU 70 and CPU 55 w/ bios settings,
but more like 76 and 61 at fan speed 1

2 - if i knew what temperatures were safe i could probably figure it out on my own, but, how about having some suggestions for fan speed thresholds? what temp is ok to have fan turn off, turn on to speed 1, 3, and 7?

3 - should i be setting the utility to ignore GPU sensor?

4 - are there more sensors on the software than in my system?

5 - are there suggestions for prolonging fan life? like constantly slow instead of always accelerating/decelerating, or starting/stopping?

6 - how about a solid link to the most recent versions and what systems they're good for, before finding this, i only found 0.18 and discussions about 0.19 coming soon. or hear things about trying the service version, or setting to run always in smart mode when 0.18 couldn't do those.

i have a load of suggestions for improving the software as well,
but don't know where to post them.

any help?
thanks!

my fan got worse, i had a replacement fan sent to me for free, and replaced it myself, the noise is gone.

now... any suggestions on tp fan control utility thresholds and settings? to prolong fan life? next year if/when this happens, i won't be under warranty, and will have to purchase the fan.

thanks!

Did your fan sound like a slowly pulsing "brrrrr" sound?
My T43 fan sounds like that.
Kind of like a really big fat fly sound.
I bought my T43 used but I have 3 months warranty left and I am wondering if I should call Lenovo up about it.

get them to send you a new fan,
if you know how to unscrew screws and remember where they go, and are careful, you can change it yourself, sending you a new fan / heat sink unit is free under warranty

Got the fan replaced.
It sounds like a quiet continuous whoosh now.
Better than before.
Very few accelerating fan episodes during bootup.
Pretty good.
Three day turnaround time at the repair depot.
Nice.
My A31 is still silent, though.
