I am trying to download rescue and recovery on my T30 (not on the computer now). I installed software installer and have downloaded several drivers and other "packages" so far. I wanted to download RnR but it says I need the latest v. of BIOS -2.09,(which in turn requires the latest v. of embedded controller etc....). I've never updated the BIOS before and was hoping for some hints/tips, where I could screw up etc....
Should software installer do everything for me or will there be things I'll have to decide on as this update process unfolds?
Thanks,
Mike

Unfortunately you will have to do a different procedure to update the BIOS, there is another procedure for updating the BIOS, you may have to update the embedded controller as well, read the documentation with the BIOS software, I would check the ibm site for instructions and software to do that first, then run software installer, also when running certain updates with the software installer a manual deletion of an older version and intstall of newer versions is required, NIC software, and video software and a few others come to mind.
instructions found here:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... uj12us.txt
Best way is to go to the IBM site downloads, plug in your computer type, and you will get a list of all available software including bios updates.

The "power on password" referred to is "thinkpad associated". If you get a picture of a lock when you turn on your machine, you've got one.
You can remove it by entering the BIOS, selecting Password-->Power on Password, and typing your current password. When the Enter New Password field opens, leave it blank and press Enter twice.
From your question, I'd guess you probably don't have power on password.
