T23 Bites Back

#1 Post by lilserenity » Thu Jun 17, 2004 8:46 pm

Hello,

You know, I'm glad I didn't get that T40/T41 in the end, I have just given my T23 a bit of a refresh which it kind of needed, it was under very heavy strain on the 20gig 512MB setup that it was.

I have upgraded it to 1GB ram now, and also a 5400rpm 40gig hard disk and wow - what a massive difference these two upgrades alone have made!

The hard disk I purchased is...

Samsung, 8MB cache, ATA-6, 5400rpm.

SiSoft Sandra reports 25MB/s transfer rate which is respectable, but the speed difference in boot up, and just everything is pheonomenal. Even more surprising is that this hard disk is virtually silent, especially compared to the 20gig 4200rpm drive that was in there before, only occasionally can I hear it.

A highly recommended buy.

Oh and bootups/general usage is not because this is a fresh XP install, as I always kept my previous install on the 20gig drive pruned carefully, and Photoshop is much faster too, so the two upgrades have really boosted the system at the fraction of the cost that T40/41 had costed me.

Now I just need to bolt the SXGA+ panel from a T22 I got my hands on to it, now that will make me very happy indeed.

Thought I'd share this recommending an excellent hard disk and also to say that sometimes upgrading an existing machine can really save you loads over buying a brand new one, and give it a boost that fulfils what you need.

Oh and that was the other thing, I didn't realise the T23 could boot from USB. Picked up my Iomega external CDRW and booted from it... which was good news, maybe I'll pick up a USB memory key and experiment.
