T23 upgrade?

#1 Post by ken159 » Tue Jan 03, 2006 9:12 pm

hi to everyone, I just want to know if its possible to upgrade my laptop's motherboard (like change it to a higher/better processor) Its a typical T23 model with 1130 mhz and I want to know if I can upgrade to something like 2.0ghz or better.

also

if its not possible, should I upgrade the ram to something like 1gb?

I believe the fastest CPU that shipped in a T23 was a 1.2 GHz. The fastest 478 pin P3-M CPU is 1.26, either of these are far short of 2.0+ GHz. The performance increase noticed would likely be negligible (6-11%), although you should be able to find one fairly cheap as there is one 1.2 on eBay with a $29.99 BIN and several up for bid for far less. Your best performance increase would likely come from upgrading your RAM as you mentioned, and upgrading your hard drive.

yeah I think I'll go with that, also, I'll upgrade the graphics card in the docking station from 128mb installed memory to a 256

I am not sure about this: I see that Intel made a PIII 1.4GHz with 512KB of cache. Is there any reason why this chip would not be able to go into a T23. I know that battery life would suck but the chip is FC-PGA2 with a 133MHz FSB which is what the T23 has. It seems to me that the best boost might still be more RAM though although the 512KB of cache might have a significant impact. Could be a bit of a toss up which way to go but with prices being what they are, maybe both upgrades are affordable.

The PIII 1.4GHz is a 370 pin package while his P3-M is 478 pin and also has 512mb RAM.

Thanks for pointing out that I got the packaging wrong meaning that this machine would not take the 1.4GHz processor that I linked to.

I found this page that has another couple of options including a 1.33GHz processor.. Would the T23 accept this?

Just to be clear, you can't upgrade the internal video card, as it is integrated into the motherboard. You CAN however add a docking station, and place a PCI video card in it.

Well, I would really like to know the specific brand of PCI graphic card that fits the docking station. As I know not all PCI graphic will fit due to its location in the docking station. Am I right?

While I haven't done it myself, I believe that it has to be a "half-height" PCI card, because of the limited space. There are several people in the forum that have accomplished this. Try searching for PCI and Docking station, and you might find some of the threads. They might even give details on the cards that were used.
