t23 help really needed

just bought a t23(my first laptop) of a friend for the kids and i,when i press the thinkpad button,nothing works.
i rang ibm t/s and asked them,apparently if the f11 dosent appear on start up the software has been deleted some how and needs a recovery partition??
would someone please help me out on this one so i can get the thinkpad working again,it will be very much appreciated

welcome to the forum.
If the hard drive was just formatted, with format C:, the hidden partition may still be there. If you have a floppy drive, there is a tool to repair the F11 message and function enabling you to access it. you can get it here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... QER6R.html
If, (sorry alot of ifs I know), that doesn't work you can install manually or obtain recovery Cds which will also recreate the recovery partition.

Install windows from cd and then the drivers which you can download from here http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... MIGR-57669
Press F1 after turning on the notebook in order to enter bios. in start up menu select the cd drive as 1st boot device. (use F6 to move it up the list if necessary). then you will be able to boot from a windows 2000 / XP cd

If you go to the link in andyp's 2nd post and click "Update your drivers and software automatically," you can download the IBM Software Installer (it might already be installed on your machine, saving you that step, just look for it). When you run that it will download and install all the latest IBM drivers and software available for your machine automatically (and only those needed), making the process much simpler than doing it manually. Once all that is downloaded and installed your Thinkpad button should work. Alternatively, if you want to update your system manually and just want to fix your Thinkpad button, THIS LINK should do the trick by installing the Access Thinkpad program. Be sure to read the "installation notes" and instructions, something you don't have to worry about if you use the Software Installer.

done that,but thinkpad button not working however i can now access it due t a new icon on my windows start,??

If you did it automatically, try it manually. You should probably unistall first.. The installation note says:
The following step is needed to activate the "ThinkPad" button located in the upper left hand corner of the system keyboard. This button will launch the Access ThinkPad application.

1. Before installing the Access ThinkPad package, the ThinkPad Configuration Utility for Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP and the ThinkPad Hot Key Utility must be installed.

Note: Windows NT users will need to ensure the latest MFC42.DLL is installed on their systems. This file is available from Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... US;q259403. Without the latest DLL installed, Access ThinkPad will not install or work correctly under NT.

1. Start Windows. If using Windows NT or XP, logon with administrative privileges.
2. Click the file link above to download the file from the Web page.
3. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file.
4. After the file download has completed, click Start, point to Find or Search, then click Files and folders.
5. Type accessthinkpad-t23-us.exe in the search box, then click Find Now. This will locate the accessthinkpad-t23-us.exe file you just downloaded.
6. Double-click the icon for accessthinkpad-t23-us.exe and follow the prompts on the screen to extract the files. Ensure that Save files in folder is set to C:\DRIVERS\ATP_PKG\.
7. Once the files are extracted, click Start, then click Run.
8. In the Open field, type C:\DRIVERS\ATP_PKG\SETUP.EXE to install the application. Click the OK button to start the installation process. If you extracted the files to a different location, specify that location instead.
9. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Uninstall
1. Start Windows XP and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
4. Select ThinkPad Assistant.
5. Click the Change/Remove button.
6. Restart the system.

Hello Cat69,

If push comes to shove, you can always pay a local tech to reinstall the verion of windows that came with your notebook. (I live in a very expensive region. The high priced tech wants $90 to reinstall Windows. But you can get a legitimate full copy of Windows 2000 off eBay for less) The license sticker should still be on the IBM, just look for the Windows logo sticker. So long as you have that any tech can legally install that version of Windows. After Windows is installed, you just go to the support site and select auto detect and install to get the latest driver versions and updates installed for you.

As of August, 2005 manufacturers are forbidden by Microsoft to deliver any recovery disks for any pre-XP version of windows. They obey. MS ordered the largest PC maker in the world, Dell, to stop advertising they will install Linux and then ordered them to stop assisting owners with installing Linux. Dell obeyed immediately and posted "Dell Recommends Windows XP Professional".

I see no problem with giving out or installing someone else's copy of pre-XP Windows, provided the owner does not give out their own activation or key number.

Well, IBM/Lenovo isn't listening...IBM won an $895 Million Dollar Lawsuit against Microsoft that not only made Microsoft pay for some former "bad faith" deals they made that had pushed out OS/2 early on; but also the right that IBM/Lenovo has to ship computers with any OS they want. You can order Thinkpads, and also get support for different OSes, and actually select your OS. If you don't believe me, go to the support site and you actually have a drop down menu that lets you select the OS your Thinkpad is running. As an example, here is my Setup where you can choose what OS Support you want

Click on the last drop-down menu; that's pretty [censored] good considering every other computer manufacturer I have seen states they *only* support Windows XP on their systems. This is another thing that puts IBM/Lenovo a notch above the rest. Also, in a recent statement, Bill Gates said that his biggest competitor was not Google, but IBM. :)
