Need Advice on DVD-Rom for DVD+R and DVD-R

#1 Post by beeblebrox » Fri Jan 06, 2006 1:14 pm

I bought a great T23 off lease without a dvd drive, which I want buy now. However, from my past experience with the T20 I know that the original IBM drive does support only DVD-R formats.

After more than an hour reading the IBM specs and forum I am almost giving up hope that I can buy a useful drive. I don't need burning (have external DVD burner), but just for watching DVDs (commercial and private recordings), which are both formats, unfortunately.

Does anyone know, what types are used in the R40, R50 series? They are ultrabay 2000 as well, aren't they? Do they support both formats?
What about generic drives and putting a plate on it? Any recommendations? Cheap and easy is my favorite.

Any help is HIGHLY appreciated! Thanks...

The "NEC Black IDE Slim DVD Burner Model ND-6650" will work in the T 2x series will work. You will need to pull off the connector off of an old drive to connect. Also need to trim the right lower corner of the face plate. But for $80.00 you will get an 8x DVD writter that supports all formats (no RAM).. not bad.

I am in the same dilema, I am willing to spend that 80, but hate to void the warranty on something that costs that much, oh well I guess we all have to take risks.

Newegg lists only the ND-6750a. I cannot find the 6750a on NECs website. Will this work the same as the 6650a?
