Anyone used PC100 memory in a T23?

#1 Post by Nolonemo » Sun Jan 22, 2006 9:25 pm

Has anyone used PC100 memory in a T23 (I know it's spec'd for PC133). I'm wondering if I could use the PC100 sticks I from my T22 in a 128MB T23 I'm getting until I can afford some CP133.

Thanks.

Funny that you ask this, as I was just sitting deciding whether or not to move the 512MB from my T21 to the T23, for a sale that I am working up.

I will be testing it momentarily, but any input from others would be greatly appreciated.

I used 128meg PC100 to try out a barebones T23, it posted but not having any drives in place, thats as far as the test went.
If it did work, mixing PC100 with PC133 memory would prolly fail.

OK, I just tested 512MB (2 256MB sticks) of PC100 in the T23 and it worked perfectly.

The downside was that the two 128MB PC133 sticks wouldn't work in the T21, which I kind of figured. I had previously gotten 2 PC133 sticks to work in a TP600E, so I was hoping that I could do the same here.

Thanks, tfflivemb2, I would have tried anyway, but was curious.

I bought a T23 with 1-128mb 133mhz stick installed. I had a 100mhz 256 stick which I added about 2 weeks ago. I have had no problems. I use wifi and play some games on it.

Oh, I am currently rebuilding a T23 and have no PC133 to hand. I tried to get it to power up with PC100 sticks without success. 1 x 256Mb Crucial and 2 x 128Mb IBM. Maybe different system boards have different tolerances. Maybe my T23 board is faulty <gulp>.

Jonathan, I wonder if your PC100 is low density or high density. Perhaps the T23 will take low density but not high density PC100 (since one poster moved working RAM from his T22 to the T23 with success, what he used was necessarily low density).

The good news for you is that PC100 costs more on ebay than PC133, so you can do a sell/buy swap and come out ahead.

Brought a T23 when my T22 was broken, neither one of the 2 256 low density(16 components) in my T22 worked in the T23, also tried a high density PC100 256 (8 components), no go either. The symptom was I could not even get past POST. The T23 is now happy as can be with PC133 512 and 256.

Hmm varying empirical results.... I guess whether a T23 will run on PC100 is either model-specific or a total crapshoot.

The good news for me (assuming it's model-specific) is that the model I'm getting is the same as the one tfflivemb2 was able to use the PC100 sticks in. We'll see....

People want to post their model numbers and results?

The only difference between the 8MU and the 4MU is XP Pro vs Win2k, so it must be a flavor of memory issue.

Some T22s will read a little PC133 but this is kind of rare.

Some 256MB memory modules have 16 chips onboard and are labeled PC133. These work in T20-22 AND T23s. Some are actually labeled PC133 on one side and PC100 on the other.

Aside from the few exceptions, T20-T22 use PC100 only and T23s use PC133 only.

The T23 I have here is a 2648-GG2 (if the label on the base can be believed!). IBM 128Mb sticks (8 chips) were FRU:20L0265 16Mx64 3.3V. The Crucial one (8 chips) - ah no, it says IBM on the reverse ... was a FRU:33L3070 32Mx64 3.3V.
