Boot disc Q

#1 Post by doktrred » Fri Jan 27, 2006 1:15 pm

With help from this forum, I have downloaded RnR and made a boot disc for my T30. I would think it would be a good idea to check the boot disc and make sure it is working as it should? Can someone walk me through how to do this? I would guess I would need to load the disc in the C/D-DVD rom, then power on with the boot disc in the drive? Should this now put me in a DOS environment? If so,
what next, if anything, Oh yea, how do I get out of DOS once in there?

If you are booting from a CD, you first have to make the CD the boot media in bios setup.

You dont. You have to take the R&R disk out and reboot to load your operating system.

So, I need to go into BIOS first and make sure the C/D-DVD rom is the drive the computer will use to boot from? Is that pretty self intuitive, anything I can screw up while doing it?

When the machine first powers up, while the IBM logo is displayed, there should be an option to choose a temporary boot device (probably F12). If you hit the key, it takes you to a screen where you can choose to boot from the CD. This should work without having to adjust the settings in the BIOS.

Youre right but boot device preference is still a bios function.

R&R CD should boot from restart without having to do anything.

Thanks,
It is F12. I will try to boot directly from the C/D at restart first. If that doesn't work, I'll try F12. Either way, this should get me to a DOS interface, Yes? And I assume if I get to the Dos interface, the disc is working correctly? Once in DOS I should have an option to go to windows or restart or something like that?
Sorry to be a PITA, but I've never done this before and I don't want to screw up !
Thanks Mike

If you are talking about the R&R environment, it does not look like dos, more like a web page. If you are restoring to factory, once the R&R loads, it will wipe the drive and prompt for more CD's, like betabily said.
I am not sure if when you download the CD from IBM if it is a bootable CD or iso. IF you don't have the recovery cd's don't start this process. T30 should have the recovery partition, unless your MBR is corrupted you should be able to invoke the recovery process at startup without any addidtional media.

Sounds like I should just leave well enough alone. My T30 has a "fresh copy of XP" but not the other factory software or utilities or rescue disc(s)etc... I've downloaded most of the drivers and also got RnR downloaded. I used RnR to make a "recovery media"- I think thats what RnR calls it, and it's a C/D in my case. I just thought I'd test the disc to see if it would work O.K. before I NEED it. Beginning to sound like it's too much of a hassle to fool with. Anyhooo, I think I'll focus on the ThinkPad button and the online manual for now.
Thanks for the replies.
